Printer & Print Server Compatibility Quesiton

    Hi All,

The company I work for has an OKI C5900 printer that is connected by USB directly to an employees workstation. We would like to connect this printer to a print server. The print server that I have in mind is the DPR - 1061 (from D-Link).

Neither D-Link or OKI can tell me whether or not these 2 devices will work together.

If anybody has experience with the hardware mentioned above can you please let me know. Alternatively if you have an OKI printer and it is connected to a print server successfully, can you please tell me the make and model of the print server that your using?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    David

Most USB print will work with your OKI printer as well as many other USB printers.

Basically, all a USB print server is, is a media converter. The print data that is sent through a USB port is exactly same as data that is sent through a parallel port or a network cable.

I haven't had a lot of experience with the D-Link print servers, but I know that the HP JetDirects are great and there is no need for installing third party port software for printing. The HP's will use the 'Standard TCP/IP Port' (even though HP want you to install the HP version of it) because they run on RAW port 9100.

If you are looking at the D-Link because of price, then I don't reckon you will have any problems.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

      True that about printservers.

We used to sell Easycom printservers along with our IP-011 controllers (which are the most basic print controllers known to man, IMHO) because it was much cheaper than sending them with konica network cards - and the IP-011 was slow at printing anyway, so.

Never had a problem between the printserver and the controller - worked flawlessly.

With most of the lower-priced print servers that we use for some of our older district printers, our USB print servers require some software to make them work.

The software needs to run from a computer in the same switch as the print server, because there is no way to print out a test page or anything from the print server itself. As soon as it's plugged into the network, it will acquire an IP addy, but you don't know what that is to go into the web interface. The software goes out and immediately finds the device, and from its MAC ID, can easily be found and reconfigured via the IP addy that it pulled. It's a piece of cake.

It sounds a bit cumbersome, but we have a lot of older printers and it makes it much easier to configure the device. The print servers we have were refurbished units for about 20.00 each and they work great.

Before you make your decision, see if the one you choose can do a configuration printout from the device, as this will make the install process really easy.

Print Servers Generally work great on Most Printers. Just don't think about using them on MFPs. Unless Network Brand Manufacturer will Verify it works don't touch it
