    Master Browser

    What is it?
My understanding is that it is windows way of resolving dns on local network without server?

If there is a better definition please post it...?

Has anyone ever had a master browser problem in a non server environment involving windows xp, vista, 7?

How are dns issues handled differently in a server environment?

Master browser is in a nutshell any workstation or server that can see a larger WAN outside of the LAN for different subnets and domains. For example, I can view the larger network of my company across Canada through such a device on our local network. It allows me to view shared resources in that WAN.

A more in depth look from MS... Description of the Microsoft Computer Browser Service

And as I understand it, a server is meant to look outside a LAN and pick up DNS entries through other computers within the network and outside the network, as well as assign internally to the LAN it serves. But a server is not an exclusive to this capability. Cable/DSL switches can also provide this, and are programmable in many cases to assign names directly to machines connected within the group the switch serves via MAC addresses.
