    Scan to Gmail

    Hi Chaps,

Have experienced a few failures of scan to gmail recently.

My settings are: mail server - smtp.gmail.com (have tried ip address as well)
    ports 465/587
    ssl "ON"
dns set to the same as the local pc's along with a secondary set as googles own
the default gateway is correctly set on the copier
trusted and working gmail account as authentication ie scanner@gmail & password

As many of you are probably aware you can test connectivity of the smtp settings from the web page on the latest sharps (ok not a full test but it proves some connectivity is occuring) which on my most recent install proved positive and the results saved but when an email is actually sent from the device the ce-00 error code is displayed failure to connect! Ive tried the customers domain email accounts and my own hotmail address as destinations but still no joy.
This also occured on a konica minolta C20 recently as well , to all intense purposes the settings are correct and have been used in 100's of installs before excluding email accounts.
I thought it maybe the switch blocking certain ports but the latest customer just has a basic netgear router in place so nothing special going - do you guys have any ideas?
    Cheers in advance.

    Re: Scan to Gmail

Gmail has had some issues the past few weeks. You may also want to check the spam box of that gmail account. If it fills up, it can cause sporadic connectivity issues.

        Re: Scan to Gmail

Had one of my techs have this issue yesterday the way around it was,
        1. set the SMTP server as the isp e.g a common aussie ISP is Bigpond so it's smtp server is mail.bigpond.com
2.most isp dont need authentication so to run through unless the error says login error

so what is going to happen is copier - router- ISP-gmail- users email

it might be a bit rough but it dose work.

            Re: Scan to Gmail

To me it sounds like a classic DNS resolution problem, try using Googles primary and secondary public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, respectively) over customers own DNS settings.

Make sure the customer isn't blocking outgoing connections, some people think they are more secure this way, but it just causes more problems for everyone.

copier (sends email) > internet Router (sends to ISP's SMTP) > ISP's SMTP Sends to gmails SMTP > Gmail Sends to user.

so let look at another example my work email runs off exchange if i send an email to user@gmail.com my email client send the mail to my exchange box and my exchange sends to Gmails smtp server and gmail delivers the mail what i'm suggesting in the scanning is the same thing but it is going to be routed through the customers ISP SMTP Server

so if the customer ISP is Bigpond my settings would be
              SMTP: mail.bigpond.com over port 25
              no authentication
              send address scanner@whateverdomain.com

              i hope i made sense

Yep- best rule is to stay away from external outside email servers-the reliability just isn't there.

If the customer has 2 step login for gmail Ie. login with user name and password then it sends an sms to a moblie phone with a second code to logon to mail. this stop anything going to gmail account. you need removed 2 step system so send to Gmail.
Note: about bigpond the have started placing users on to hotmail live servers.

this is only a work around if the gmail servers just don't want to play ball,
as copier techs we need to get the email to go from a to b if the customer has multiple logon requirements then good for them, but if the copier can send to a mail server with no error's then it has done it's job. and the way i have told to set this up doesn't require authentication there for the password and SMS code become irrelevant.
