Adobe Reader XI on a W7/32 platform is e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y............ slow. Both in opening of docs and printing as well.

You could try disabling the sandboxing the programme tries to do by default as a security measure:
Preferences>Security (Enhanced)>uncheck Enable Protected Mode at startup
This will put you at a slightly higher risk of malware spread by PDF. Also make sure you're running the latest and greatest version of 11.02.
