If he's running Home Premium, then he probably has some kind of security suite installed as well. Make sure that all of the firewall rules are set to allow the copier to access ports 139 TCP, 137 UDP, and 445 TCP. You can also make sure that the Windows firewall allows access by following the instructions in the attachment. Also check the following:

    1. Is the network type on the computer set to Home or Work: these two options turn file sharing on.
    2. Do the network connections of the computer allow NetBIOS over TCP/IP? Network Connections>IP v4>Properties>Andvanced>WINS>NetBIOS Setting>Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
    3. Are the permissions on the Share folder set to allow Everyone R/W access?
    4. With just the firewall settings adjusted to allow SMB as above, can the copier find the computer using the network browse feature on the scanner?

The Home versions of Windows always throw a few quirks in the way since they lack a lot of the more granular controls of the Professional and Ultimate versions. I've always tried to steer my family members, especially the less experienced ones, towards spending the extra money for Ultimate. That way, when I help them set up the machine I can make a few tweaks to the security policies to help harden the machine a little more while still giving them the flexibility to 'abuse' the machine as they see fit.
