Slow spooling from Adobe Software on Mac

    Hi,

This issue has been doing my head in. I have a client who's prints brochure/presentation documents with lots of graphics and text to a Fuji Xerox DocuCentre-IV C3373. They print these files from Adobe Acrobat or InDesign mainly, but when they hit print, it sits on their Mac for a long time spooling before it sends to the printer. A 4mb PDF file sent from Acrobat could take a few minutes to spool on the Mac before being sent to the FX C3373 MFP. If they print the same file from the 'Preview' program on the Mac the spooling is very quick. The client only seems to have these slow spooling issues from Adobe software on their Macs (They have the latest Acrobat). Printing as an image from Acrobat for example makes things worse.

The Fuji Xerox DocuCentre-IV C3373 uses Adobe PostScript 3 memory and not PostScript emulation. Their previous Xerox Phaser 7300 which also had Adobe PostScript 3 on board didn't have slow spooling issues on the Mac, plus they also have an Oce 22C-1 MFP which doesn't have the spooling issues either. I couldn't find much info on the Oce, but it looks like a re-branded KM device and I suspect it uses emulated PS.

I tried printing from my Windows laptop with the devices PS print drivers and had no long spooling delays at all really, so this issues points towards an issue with the Fuji Xerox DocuCentre-IV C3373 Mac PS driver and Adobe software on the Mac.

We're printing via LPD, but I don't believe this is a port issue, it's a spooling issue with the Mac PS print drivers and Adobe.

Does anybody know what could be causing this issue?

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks

This is really a bizarre problem. I did a test print with one of the test PDF files they gave me and it spools normally on the Mac I was using in my office which has an almost identical setup to one of the Macs at the client.

I'm very confused and any comments etc would be very welcomed.

    Thanks

Re: Slow spooling from Adobe Software on Mac

      I'm still really puzzled!

There appears to be a big spool delay when printing PDF files from their Macs. I tried using the Oce driver, Xerox Phaser driver and the generic PS/PCL and different ports, port settings and spool settings (hard disk, memory and no spooling) with no luck. We also reset/reloaded the Mac print system with no luck either. The Fuji Xerox C3373 MFP is connecting at 100mpbs (maximum it can do) and the Mac is at 1000mbps. So both are connected at their maximum and the connection is also stable.

Now I'm happy to say I have found a workaround fix. I have setup the Mac users to print via the printer share on their windows server, and bizarrely there is no long spooling delays anymore. Having them print via their windows server actually is A LOT quicker, odd I know.

I'm thinking it's a spooler issue on their Macs, but we've also tried resetting the print system which sets it all back to default settings. Also why would we just get slow downs with this particular printer, even when using different drivers. Also I was not able to replicate this issue elsewhere so it cant be the printer or the drivers. Printing via the windows printer share proves it's not the print driver or the printer physically.

Have a look for a printing feature within InDesign called Pre-Flight.

Try turning that off and see how your spool speeds are effected.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

Yeah I thought about that one, I noticed it in one of your threads about postscript passthrough. But they get this issue when printing from acrobat and reader, as well as preview (not with print as image).

I'll give it a try to see if it speeds things up in InDesign.

          Thanks

You can try turning off PostScript Passthrough if you have that option in the driver as this should stop the computer from messing with the file as well.
