    Lanier eCopy

Anyone here with experience on installing eCopy into a Lanier MP C4503 want to give me some advice? I have a customer who wants to scan to desktop but does not want to use SMB or FTP scanning. I'm pretty sure eCopy is my best bet but I am not sure what exactly I would need to install. Do I just need the Java card and the ShareScan v5 Suite, or am I able to install one of the cheaper ShareScan options? Any input is appreciated.

Why not just have them scan to a memory device? There are connections on the side of the control panel for both thumb drive and SD card.

It's a public school system that has their IT/IS department providing the specs for the machine. They want it a certain way or no way at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wont the ecopy have to use SMB to scan back to the desktop anyway? It may not be called SMB scanning like you would see at a MFP, but basically it's the same process. You could use scan to email, but that won't magically appear on the desktop. Emujo

I believe you are correct, but to be honest I'm really not sure. Based off the demo videos and brochure it appears to be SMB file sharing, but this particular IT department does not want a server share or server piece and will not use scan to SMB. My sales guys have no idea what else to throw at these guys so I suggested eCopy, but I'm not 100% sure how it works or what options need to be loaded.

Kind of seems like a big waste of money to perform a function that the machine has the native capacity to do. It sounds like your customer has some rather unrealistic expectations so I'd go with the most unrealistic form of scanning possible: TWAIN.

If I'm not mistaken though, all eCopy does is allow TWAIN to work over a network share. You may want to have the sales guy use the standard questioning process in the RFP to get clarification of just how they're looking to scan instead of just playing a guessing game.

Almost sounds to me like their IT/IS department has someone who is involved with a rep for a product that they are trying to spec without directly specifying the make and model.

you have a c4503, so which operation panel does it have, that along will change your options.......

Either version of eCopy ( ScanStation or ShareScan) would require an additional PC, or software to be installed on an existing one.

Have you thought about Embedded GlobalScan ?

No server required, and can scan back to almost any folder, including the logged in user's home folder.

It would use SMB as the protocol to transport the scans, but the scan folder structure would follow that of Active Directory / LDAP.

Assuming the C4503 is an SP model, it has Java pre-installed, if not it must be ordered. ( That's how the Ricoh models work, anyway...).

                    Re: Lanier eCopy

Ecopy has 2 versions, the scan station is a stand alone workstation that must be hooked up as a domain account, the ecopy software (scan station admin, and client) are loaded on the workstation. Typically, a TWAIN driver is used to capture the scans from the MFP then they are distributed depending on the configuration of the admin console. Scan to email, folder, FTP, and many connectors to scan directly into a doc management system are available. Advanced document processing is available like searchable PDF, bates stamping, indexing ect. The other version is the intragrated, or embedded ecopy. The software is installed on a server (preferred) and the program takes advantage of the MFPs touch screen and web browser functionality to complete the interface. The capabilities are the same. Ecopy also comes with PDF pro that functions a lot like Adobe Acrobat. yes the MFP can do the basic scanning stuff, but to get a doc management system you will need something else. Ecopy is not the only one out there, NSI, is another one of my favs. Emujo

How about create a share folder on the desktop of destination computer. Then use SMB scan to that created share folder with option of user name and password if required.
