Canon connected direct with lan cable vs Verizon jetpack

I have a customer that is in construction. They have a trailer on a worksite with a canon imagerunner. They don't have a network in place. I connected the canon to the pc's network interface card directly with a cat5 cable. This PC gets its internet via a usb verizon jetpack device. When I configured the network adaptor connected to the copier I set a static IP with the subnet mask. The gateway I left blank. The copier works just fine for printing.

But the internet will not work when the copier is plugged in. When unplugging it or disabling the local network interface card the internet will again work. I figured it should work since the gateway is left blank. It seems like windows is trying to use that local interface for the internet instead of the verizon device.

Any idea how I can get both of these to work together.

    Copier is a CANON-2018I
    OS is windows XP.

I don't know much about Canon but, I did have the same problem on KM bizhub36.. The customer had some kind of "bridge connection" on the laptop. If i disabled the bridge, printing worked, internet did not and vice versa. I don't know if it was because of the Verizon box or not so I gave up and used a USB cable instead. The customer did not scan so I didn't have to worry about that part.

USB isn't as option. I actually changed it from USB because for whatever reason the USB connectivity between copier and computer is all jacked up. Canon told us it might be a bad USB port or controller on the copier. Could not even get it to connect to USB on my laptop.

You have to use a crossover cable to plug directly into a computer.
That or install a hub or switch.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

This isn't always the case. Most modern ethernet devices are capable of auto sensing connections and are able to switch them automatically. The network card in this computer is Auto MDI-X capable. In fact the connection between the copier and the computer is just fine. Problem is that windows is giving priority to this network card as a source of internet when the verizon device need to be given the priority. I even had this problem years ago when I had a home network with no internet with my only internet source was tethering from a cell phone. I had to disable my network card for the internet to work. Normally removing the gateway from the network card worked in my case. I have researched how windows decides which network adaptor to use as priority but allow both to function. There seems to be several variables on how windows decides this based on an order of a listed priority or different metrics that windows is programmed with to decide which adaptor should be used.

I have this microsoft article How to change the binding order of network adapters in Windows XP and in Windows 2000 which may help. With this and other sources found from others who have had similar scenarios, this just may help.

Turn off automatic metric for both network adaptors and giving the Verizon device a higher metric than the lan card did the trick.
