What do you know about ITU-T.38 (VoIP)

What can you tell me about ITU-T T.38 specifically for Ricoh machines.

I've been reading some stuff online but nobody tells me if it works great.
Some of my customers would like to know if that is a good idea but I just know that VoIP faxing consumes a lot of the bandwidth on the network.

Please tell what you think about this

    Thanks

Just for research purposes... because I know fausto1981 has seen this... probably.

T.38 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - in depth info on the standard
RFC 4612 - Real-Time Facsimile (T.38) - audio/t38 MIME Sub-type Registration - Ricoh paper on the specification, in HTML format

I had a customer the other day that was having problems with their analog line, for a Savin 9016, and I suggested to their VOIP support team that we use the machines IP-FAX features to overcome this and they were stunned that our machine could do this. They said that they would try to fix the line first, but in the future would keep this in mind if the need arose again.

Be careful though, because the older Ricoh machines that use this feature use it as E-mail. So it may not work for everyone! Basically, it takes a fax that you are sending and turns it into a an e-mail and sends it to a fax machine that supports this spec that reconverts it into fax. From my understanding, the more recent MFP's actually utilize the VOIP standard (using the SIP IP's and such) and truly works within the confines of the system. This might be why so many people feel that Fax over IP is about as reliable as a baby on crack!
