Network Scanning Problem on Sharp MX-C401

I have been having intermittent problems at one location where the user can't scan to their PC running Windows 7 & using Sharpdesk 3.2. I was told that there is an issue with Sharpdesk 3.2 and Windows 7 and I needed to install Sharpdesk 3.3. I deleted 3.2 and installed 3.3 on one computer and it worked just fine. I did the same thing on another computer and the scan hung up and never went through. So I tried to scan again from the computer that had worked and this time it hung up. I had their computer guy check out their network for possible problems and He told me He could not find anything wrong. (I am also having intermittent problems where IE won't log into the machine's web server from more than one computer.) I began to suspect that there might be a problem with the Sharp machine so I used a network switch with my laptop and set up my own network! Scanning with Sharpdesk 3.3 worked fine on my laptop. I proceeded to set up SMB scanning and it worked as well. I connected the machine back on their network and scanning started to work fine to both computers so I left. They called me that afternoon to let me know that it had stopped working again!!!!!!

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts!

I would start simple. If the problem is not happening to all PCs, I would not think it is the copier. If the effected PC is connected wirelessly, that could be an issue. The weaker the signal the more problems with scanning, in my experience. Make sure data cable is no running along side electrical wires. Crossing path of electrical wires should not be an issue. Other than that, check firewall settings. Try setting up for scan to network folder or email. If it continues to work, that would be indication that it is not a copier issue.

Make sure the the Network scanner tool services are running and that the firewall is not blocking anything. A simple test would be to disable all firewalls on their PC's, make sure the services are running and send a test scan.

Re: Network Scanning Problem on Sharp MX-C401

Thanks for the replies guys! I have an update. The customer called back the other day and told me that they can't print to the machine now. (Network printing to the machine has never been an issue.) I went there and I tried to print a test page from one of the computers and it did not print. The print job cleared the print queue of the computer and the data light on the machine was blinking. I looked at the job status of the machine and the print job was not listed. The data light eventually quit blinking but my test page did not print. I printed a network config page and went to the computer to make sure the print driver was set to the correct IP address. I tried another test page and it printed right away! I did not change anything! I asked another user that had also been unable to print to print something and it worked on her computer as well.

I am thinking that my next step is to replace the logic board that has the network interface in it. What do you think?

We have noticed very intermittent printing issues in the last few months. It seems to have effected all manufacturers that we service. Take a look at this post and see if it might help you out.

I wouldn't go changing boards yet. The customer's network sounds like a mess to me.

The symptom you describe here will occur on a Ricoh if the machine is set to require a user code for printing and the print job does not have one.

Unplug the network cable and try to ping copier's IP. There may be something else on the network that grabbed it's IP address if it's within the DHCP scope.

Also, make the the customer isn't connected to multiple networks at once, such as a wireless and the wired network.

As the previous post stated, if your copier requires user codes and they are not input into the print driver, it will reject the job and disappear. Luckily when our Kyoceras have this problem, it will tell you on the screen it rejected the job because of an invalid user code. Even if it's been working for years, check it to make sure the user code (as well as all other default settings) are still in the print driver.

Another thing to check is duplicate IP address on the network. When they have the intermittent problems, have them unplug the copier's network cable and do a continuous ping and see if there is a reply (shouldn't be with copier unplugged). With the continuous ping still going, have them plug the copier back in and see if there is a reply (should be with the copier plugged in).

(continuous ping uses the -t switch, for example: ping -t 192.168.1.200 You can use Ctrl-C to stop it)

Thanks for the info but I was not printing from IE. It was a test page from the print driver that did not want to print.

I did not know that there was a -t switch for continuous ping. Thanks for the tip! I went back yesterday and did a "reset" on the network card, and obtained a new IP address via DHCP. I reset network printing and scanning on 2 computers and everything was working when I left. Now the real test is time, because I have been down this road before.

The only problem I have with DHCP is, unless you reserve the IP address in the DHCP server, after a power outage you could get a different IP address.

OK guys, sorry for the late post but this is the latest update! Like I stated previously, I found a NIC reset command on the machine while on the machine diagnostic mode. I executed the reset and the machine rebooted. I obtained a new IP address using DHCP then set the IP to static. I went to 2 computers and deleted the print driver and Sharpdesk software on both of them, I then reinstalled the print driver and Sharpdesk 3.3 on the computers. It has been several weeks and everything is working fine!

Unless you've reserved that IP another device may get assigned to it, and then the device will be kicked off the network.

Thanks for the input. You mean to tell me that even though I set the IP address that I got from DHCP server to Static (Manual) on the Sharp MX-C401, the DHCP server might still assign the same IP address to another device?

Yes. Especially following a power outage. I like to coordinate with IT and set a static IP address outside the DHCP address range. Many IT people like to have IP printers in a certain IP range. When I am providing IT services, I like to use xxx.xxx.xxx.05x or xxx.xxx.xxx.07x.
