Hi

ive got a canon c2020 that scans to email with a .pdf attachment but the clients receive them as .eml files, any ideas greatly appreciated

A .eml file is an email. They can try opening the .eml file with Outlook, OutlookExpress, ThunderBird or some other email program. What email program are they using?

Also, are they using a relay server to get around Smtp over SSL or TLS problems? If this is the case, it is forwarding the emails as attachments. It needs to be reconfigured to forward "Inline".
