Email setup on a Toshiba e-STUDIO352

Can anyone help me out. My company purchased a Toshiba e-STUDIO352, and we cannot get the machine to scan to email successfully. A tech from the company we purchased it from tried and was unsuccessful. We have tried various changes in the smtp client settings and all result in the "Failed to connect to SMTP server" error message in the topaccess scan logs. Has anyone gotten their printers email setup to work with an exchange server and if so, what method of authentication are you using? How are they entering in the smtp server's IP address, is it the public IP or the private IP address. This printer is located in a regional office and I access it remotely using http. Can anyone help me??

in top access make sure that the DNS is entered properly
ensure the address of the smtp server is correct, sometimes if the smtp server is local to that segment of the network, just an IP will do.
I have seen on some smtp servers that the sender info my be a valid account even though, no authentication is required. That is set in the e-mail hyper link in the administration section.
