Noob: Setting up scanning over a network XP

Having trouble setting up TWAIN scan function over a network.
The multifunction unit is labeled Savin C2408. Web Image Monitor lists the unit as an Aficio 1224C.

I downloaded and installed the "Network TWAIN Driver" driver from Savin
    C2408/C3210 download page
but I do not know how to proceed to connect/install the scanner. Yes I have googled and read portions of the manuals.

Control Panel -> Scanners cannot find a driver and I cannot find a new .inf after install of the "Network TWAIN Driver" and a reboot.

The unit is already setup as a printer so I know the network connection is functional. It is setup on the generic LAN (192.168.x.x). Client running Windows XP SP3 and Windows Firewall "OFF".

I understand there are other ways of getting scans from the unit but TWAIN seemed the easiest for minimal use.

The Ricoh network twain driver cannot be setup with the add scanner function from Windows control panel, there is no .inf file associated with it.

Once you download the driver file, run it and it should take you through the install wizard. When it is finished, open a Word document, and select 'insert', then 'picture', then 'from scanner or camera'. You should now be able to select the machine from the pull down list. It should say 'Type xxxx Scanner', where x would be the model number of the machine.

The reason that web image monitor shows the wrong machine name is because the plug and play setting is not correct on the machine. You can change it to the correct make/model in SP modes.

    Hope this helps.

That worked thank you. That solution was actually available all over these forums, Doh.

I was not aware the "TWAIN driver" was a whole application that configures all the scan options when it is selected as the scanner.
I tried using the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard because I recall that being a fairly complete capture program, but it faults because it cannot find a scanner. Acrobat and Word find the scanner so I do not necessarily need the MS Scanner app to capture.

      Thanks Again.

Setting up scanning over a network XP

I have a similar problem, followed the same procedure except for an AF 1022. I've installed the TWAIN driver. I go to MS Word and then Insert picture, no TWAIN scanner shows up. The laptop is connected over a wireless network, is that the problem? If it is there any other solution to scan documents?

This shows how to let twain through the firewall.

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

My guess would be the scanner should be listed if the right driver is installed correctly. There does not appear to be a connectivity check prior to selecting the scanner and pressing Insert. I ran the procedure while not connected to any network or with any scanner hooked up and the driver was still an option to scan from.
It appears to only start looking for a scanner after selecting the scanner/driver and beginning the scan process.

Using nmfaxman's suggestion appears to be more of a fix for not being able to locate the scanner, which I assume only happens after a driver is properly installed = selectable. A similar Ricoh knowledgebase post that does not require the Ricoh software is a help faq called "After I installed Service Pack 2, Windows XP became unable to find the scanner. How can I fix this problem?". Which reads like more of a connection problem than an installation problem.

Did you install the TWAIN driver from the link in the first post (AF 1224C) or did you get the driver specifically for your device (AF 1022):

FYI Twain is application software, not a driver.
It communicates directly with the hardware to tie into any scanning software.
IE a bridge not a driver.
Run the setup and then install desktop binder.
              REBOOT.
Scan with desktop binder, which is also written for Ricoh's.
Add an advanced exception in windows firewall this the tcp/ip port the same as the copier and give both the ports an assignment of 1022.
If desktop binder see's the machine, then every application that supports scanning will work.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?
