    Scanning to host name

    HI guys

I have had numerous incidents where we setup scan to folder to scan to the PCs hostname and after a while we get complaints that the scanning is not working. Resetting the router usually sorts out the problem. Or setting the pc to a static IP will also solve the issue. Any ideas why the hostname scanning will stop working?

Some possibilities: Domain Name mismatch if the PC is part of a Domain, local DNS server should be the first DNS listed, Workgroup name mismatch, NETBios over TCP/IP is disabled on PC. There are also a few security settings in Group Policy that can block Hostname publishing.

Smb host name can also cause issues if the name is longer than 15 characters long ie: thisisareallylongname and thisisareallylongname1 will be seen as the same host name on a network as the limitations will see both hostnames as thisisareallylo and not unique

If resetting a router is fixing the problem, then it sounds like it's a small office or some kind of customer using a consumer style router for DHCP and DNS. In situations like this there's very little DNS scavenging so the DNS table on the MFP isn't always that up to date. Unless you're using a a real DNS server or using some kind of custom firmware on the router you're not going to get anything resembling local name resolution: consumer equipment just isn't made to do that kind of work.

Depending on the number of hosts they're scanning to, static IP may be your best bet; just be sure to put the IP's outside of the range that the router can assign via DHCP. The only other option is setting up some kind of DNS server either through Windows Active Directory, or just a Linux box with the service.

I have actually seen a couple situations where it would not work unless I put the hostname in all CAPS. Now it have done this for quite a while just out of habit.

Sounds like and IP DHCP problem and Lost DNS. Nortons 360 internet security had problem with the host name immediate updates.

            Something else to watch.
Someone may have deleted the entire "Scan" directory, then recreated the Scan folder/ directory again.
Even if they share the directory as normal windows can sometimes disallow recognition of the share. I feel it may have something to do with the windows system-restore function. I've never really tracked it down.
            Try "net share <sharename> /del"
            then net share <sharename=FOLDER> /grant:everyone,FULL

Is IP v6 turned on for the MFP? I run into issues with pinging the hostname returning an IP v6 address instead of an IP v4 address rather often. The MFP will code out if IP v6 is disabled in its network settings.

Although, I've never had this problem be resolved by rebooting the router. I'd consider getting a new router, personally.

Quick plug: mikrotik routers are extremely powerful and about as much as consumer routers. They're rock solid and pretty much amazing. Get one, you won't regret it.
