    Canon MS800 Microfilm Scanner

    Hello All,

I am not a tech, but rather a handy guy who needs to fix this scanner. There was an error code of E2 02 when I first fired her up, so I cleaned the scanner shaft and lubed with light oil. That error has not come back, but........I am having a heck of a time getting the scanned image to scan properly and process to the screen of the PC while using ScanningUtility 800 software.

I seem to be only scanning the right half of the scanner screen and even that is poor when sent to the PC screen.

I am not sure where to go from here and could use some help.

    Cheers,

    david

      Re: Canon MS800 Microfilm Scanner

I have had this sitting around waiting for me to get to it. I was told when I received it that it was fully functional. When I went to try and set it up on my winXP PC, it would not do more than flash the e2-02 error code. I found the service manual online and discovered that the error could be caused by the shaft not being clean and properly lubed. I am not a tech, so I just used alcohol to clean and 3-in-1 oil to lube. I can always clean it again and apply the correct oil if this is going to cause an issue, but it seems to work smoothly and no more E2 02 error code.

The image projected on the ms800 screen is perfect and just as I would expect from past use of a similar canon machine scanner.

It is the scanning motion that I am having trouble with and the subsequent image processed to my PC for saving as PDF. The image sensor does not go more than about half way across toward the left of the screen and then proceeds to scan to the right. When that image gets processed to my PC it is missing all data to the left of center on my intended scanned image, and even that image looks very weak and unreadable.

Like I said, I do have the actual service manual, not the user manual, and I have a fair inclination toward circuit analysis, but I think this may be more of a software issue rather than my connection to the scanner through my PCI/SCSI controller. Something may have been bumped out of place during shipment, but I do NOT see anything obvious or glaring.

I have some fiche that I desperately need to scan and would love to have this at my disposal. I am fairly certain I can get it going, but it will take some hand holding from good folks here.

      Cheers,

      David

        Re: Canon MS800 Microfilm Scanner

I think I was mistaken about how far to the left the image sensor was moving. I tilted up the front panel/screen and watched it move through all of the motions properly, but the image is still missing the left portion and what does make it onto my PC is not in any way readable.

The light intensity compensation seems to function at the beginning and end of the scan motion.

Also, the one knob all the way to the right that controls the manual zoom, focus, and rotate controls seems kind of finicky.

        Hope this helps..........

OK, a little more info. I can adjust the brightness and contrast and I start to get an image on the PC after a scan, but nothing of any consequence. It does seem to be moving and scanning the whole document, but something is keeping it from getting that scant the pc as something I can work with. And, taking the exposure too far to the left makes the image on the PC go totally black. There is no setting that seems to get me a good solid image on my pc.

          Any thoughts?

                Re: Canon MS800 Microfilm Scanner

Thank you for those instructions as I have not seen them before. I have always had the power to the scanner on before applying power to the PC.

I did not get a demo so I have no way of knowing for certain that it worked properly when acquired. I have all of the factory manuals and I do not see how these new ones are supposed to help me, but I am sure I am running a lil slow this am.

I do not think it is a scsi controller issue or a hardware issue. If it were, would it still control the movement and not the imagery? As I have said, everything about the movement seems to be working correctly, but it is the imagery that gets to my PC screen that has me stopped in my tracks.

Where to go from here? Is there any way to confirm that the image sensor is NOT at fault?
