I have been asked if a 2220i can be converted to a 3320i. My question to the individual was why. I remember hearing whispers of Alchemists and Druids doing this. If anyone has insights please reply.

Take a black marker. Cross out the 22 and write 33 above it. Simple.

I agree to all the above. A Wizard of the Black Arts (mono-chrome) said that the secret is in the counter boards. My Question still is why.

Neither the Counter Memory PCB nor the Serial Number PCB can be swapped to other equipment.
The Counter Memory PCB keeps track of the total count, which cannot be erased or changed. The service counters are retained by the Main Controller.
These counters can be reset manually through service mode. When the Counter Memory PCB must be replaced, after installing the new one, the new Counter Memory PCB learns the Total Count from the Main Controller.
This is retained in SRAM on the Main Controller PCB and held active by means of an on board battery.

Serial Number PCB is Restricted can only be obtained by contacting the Canon Technical Support.
Counter Memory PCB Used in the Soft Counter Circuit is Available for Purchase.
