Canon IPF 710 can't load paper

I was using an ancient HP plotter to print drawing for bidding. I was getting tired of repairing the plotter so I decided to buy a used Canon IPF 710 plotter. I loaded new ink and turned on and it started just fine until I loaded the paper. I had it on roll and keep getting the error message paper size not detected after at least 20 attempts I switched it to sheet and tried a cut sheet. I then got leading edge not lined up with orange line, again after numerous attempts, I ended up here. Does anyone have any suggestions. I am choosing the paper type.

I tried cleaning the sensor. I noticed in the menu I'm getting no media found. How can I test the sensor?
