[Error Code] Main Board Request - E196-404E

Hi All,

I'm new here as I accidentally bought a broken canon IPF610 and so decided to attempt a repair..

I bought it from a guy who seemed to know what he was doing but not so sure, so, a bit of a back story for the machine:

It started with a "close upper cover" error, which was bodged by the guy I bought it from by shorting pin one and three on the sensor connection. This let the printer boot but now all I get is the dreaded E196-404E.. (Does anybody know if this could be caused by an incorrect response voltage being relayed back to the main board?)

Now that I've got the machine I've been able to do a firmware update to 1.42 but nothing has changed, still giving the error. I've ordered a new opto-sensor in hope that this could bring it back to life.

If this doesn't work I will be looking at replacing the main board, so my question is;

Does anybody have a main board that they know is in good working order without errors and if so, would they be willing to sell/exchange?

I realize your issue and post is quite old but were you ever able to resolve this issue? You mentioned purchasing a new opto-sensor, did that help?
Did new Main Controller board solve problem?
I have the exact same issue with an IPF605 purchased for next to nothing...(and now know why).

i have replaced multi sensor, carriage pcb but I am reluctant to go for main controller pcb since it is big bucks and as much as I would like to bring this beast back to life there comes a point where a boat anchor is a boat anchor.

I was able to get by the close cover message in the same way you described by shorting the two sensor leads (3.3 volt to the ~1 volt, ground left disconnected) but was eventually brought to the E196-404E error.

Another poster went as far as desoldering the ROM chip and replacing with unwritten new one of same type and was able to get to service menu but no further updates on that thread.

Also ran across a post with pics of SMT fuses (although for different model 8000 series) which apparently could cause 404E error.

I was able to flash firmware with 1.10 version using the L Print Service software but no help.

Canon techs are no help and everything associated with these machines costs so much that it makes no sense to proceed past a certain point. (Service, parts).

Unless a fairly cost effective fix is found, I will be scavenging this printer for parts. (which is a shame since it seems so close to "life")

Hi!,
I'm nearly in your same situation. IPF605 with an E196-404E error only allowing me to boot on download mode. I've already tried to fixit updating the firmware to 1.10, but no luck.
Did you replace the main board? Leave it and throw the towel?
Any help will be very appreciated.

Printheads short on these and fry controllers. Printhead and main controller, firmware...go from there. Expensive, yes, but if firmware didn't do anything its the next step. I repair these things for a living..20 years working on Canon IPFs. Good luck...I see people try to repair them all the time and I've also seen a shorted print head fry the new main board that was just installed...If you think you will fix it for a low cost, ..once again...good luck. People bark at me all the time about the cost to repair... Cap absorbers need replacing regularly, etc. Lack of maintanence will eat parts
