    C5550 Cannot recognize drum

This new Canon C5550 has intermittently been displaying a message "Cannot recognize drum, may not be a Canon product". Sometimes all 4 drums, but can be any combination. Alarm codes 900010, 900011,900012,900013 show depending on which drums were not recognized.

Sometimes the message goes away when the machine is turned off and on. Machine works normally even with the message displayed. Durable counter goes to zero for whichever drums alarmed as though the drums were replaced.

I called Canon and replaced two boards they recommended, connection pwb and front driver pwb. Firmware is up to date. Haven't replaced drums since they are expensive and it doesn't seem to be one drum in particular.

If anyone has ideas I am interested.

    Thanks

    Cannot Recognize Drum Unit message

    Problem :

Cannot Recognize Drum Unit message, either at installation or during operation "Drum Cannot Be Recognized" message may appear.

    Possible scenarios
1: A single drum is displayed and may be having an issue.
2: All drums are displayed and may be having an issue.
3: A 'Cannot recognize the drum unit for the black drum' message after two black drums were installed.
4: The machine couldn't recognize one of the drum units. It was the cyan drum that the machine wasn't recognizing.

The drum positions were swapped around and the message remained the same.
The machine came to ready and worked for a brief period of time once the wire ties were removed from the harness that goes from J608 (UN20-Process Unit Relay PCB) to J6803 (UN72-Drum Unit New/Old Sensor).

    Solution :

    Scenario 1:

    1. Ensure the latest System Software has been installed.
    2. Swap drums to see if the problem stays with the drum in question. If it moves with the drum, replace the drum unit. If it does not move, then proceed to next step.
    3. Replace the Drum Contact PCB (FM1-V982-000) for the drum in question.

    Scenario 2:

    1. Ensure the latest System Software has been installed.
    2. Replace the Connecting PCB Assembly (FM1-V983-000) on the front of the Process Kit Assembly.
    3. Ensure proper connection with the Process Kit Assembly and the frame.

    Scenario 3:

1: Reforming the UN73 contact resolved the message and the black drum was properly recognized.

    Scenario 4:
1: The resolution was to replace the Drum IC cable. The part number for the cable is FM1-V985-000.

Thanks for the info. I mostly have scenario #2 and have already replaced the connecting PCB.

Maybe I should try replacing the Drum IC cable

I can promise you it has nothing to do with any circuit boards. I still dont know why Can wants 995.00 for this little drum. I already dont like this model.

Do you use OEM OPC's? How much pages they print? Do you have same error after reinstal of OPC's?
