You have to be aware of the Microsoft distinction in the Printer Properties menu between Preferences (General Tab) and Printing Defaults(Advanced Tab).

Preferences allows you to set the defaults for the client you are working on. Printing Defaults sets the defaults for Sharing - that means it is only relevant if you are on a server or intend to shared the printer from the client.
