I get error message check printer on the display can anyone help me

This machine is actually a fax machine rather than a copier which means that it follows canons standard for fax machine service mode not copier service modes.
Press 'user data' or 'data registration' and then the '#' key and then 'set' or 'ok'. the display should read something like 'sssw1 00000000' scroll over to the last '0' on the right and change it to '1', press 'set' and then 'reset'. The display should now show the check printer message followed by ## and a 3 digit number. Report back here what that number is and we can help you more. Chances are its the fuser but it could be the laser.
