Going back and reading your reply, The lamp does flicker on but is out before the machine initialization is done. Does this indicate some other problem? The machine isn't here so I can't be sure about much else. The machine displays E0000255-000. What do you think? SamComment

If the lamp does not turn on, it is useful to check up scanner position at reading of a white plate, and also work CCD unit.

The scanning lamp is faulty. The CCD PCB is faulty. The reader controller PCB is faulty.
These are some more details about this error code. When does the error code start? This is very important to know. Keep in mind about the lamp inverter PCB.Comment

When I first turn the machine on from the side switch (not the wall plug),the lamp seems to be full strength for one second, it then flashes eight or nine times and goes blank. The scanner homes by moving a few inches out and back as the lamp does the flashes. Once this is done the machine is in the error stage and inoperative. I will be on this call Monday morning and will check it with an informed eye. I'll post what I find and probably have more questions. Thanks, SamComment

As you stated the lamp comes on and the optics move forward and back. That's normal. Though the lamp intensity may be weak, still check the CCD and clean the white plate and reseat all connectors on the reader controller. Bring a lamp with you if you have one. Good Luck,
