I have a Canon Imagerunner 550 that has been giving me an E100 error code. According to the service manual diagnostic levels it says that I have something in the way of the laser path. I have taken the laser system and bd unit out and cleaned them with compressed air and no luck. I read on one string that it could be a sticky shutter but it doesn't seem to be the case. Is there a way to clean the bd mirror? Are there any special tricks I should try before I call in the big time techs or is this machine not worth it (i.e. is the laser unit bad, etc.) Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

In service mode check VL1M the normal VL1M range is 62 to 82 anything higher like 300v the laser is shot. Some of the common causes of an E100 error are: beam detect, pre exposure lamps, IP pcb and the drum. Also you can check potential control. But if you have E100 change the laser unit and check VL1M. Service mode *28* Copier>Dpot>VL1M -
On the 550/600 the laser shutter is actuated by the front door interlock. If the interlock assembly is loose or the plate is bent (from techs interlocking the door open) it will cause an E-100. You can remove the shutter and not have a problem. If you removed the BD sensor I hope you put it back in the exact same spot (marked the frame where the old one mounted) or you could have problems with it seeing the beam.Is the glass half full or half empty? I say neither. The glass is obviously full, full of potential. The potential to hold more water or the potential to quench a thirst. Life is all about how you see it.Comment

VL1M is 145
Thanks for the info. The vl1m is 135 and the VDM is 445. I am curious what you think of these values since the vl1m is out of the range but not at the 300v level.
The machine will copy for awhile and then throw an e100 error again. We can usually shut it off, power it back up and then copy some more. Maybe this info will be helpful indiagnosing the problem.
As for the BD sensor, yes, I did mark the old position and replaced it in the same position but how would someone align this sensor otherwise.
Finally, what does a new laser unit cost? Maybe I don't want to know.
Thanks.Last edited by Guest; 02-13-2009, 11:41 PM.Comment

Screwtape,
You posted on my canon IR550 e100 problem and I thought I would send you this post that I just put up just in case you didn't look back at the original. I checked the values that you suggested and I was curious what you thought. Thanks.
