canon clc 1180 multifeeder will not recognize any size paper

Is there some settings that are needed to get the multifeeder on a clc 1180 to recognize that is has paper loaded? When I select the bypass it stay grayed out even when there is paper there. I can’t even do a
Grad. A. Adjust because the paper cassette doesn’t recognize that it has paper in it. Does anyone have an idea why?
