    Canon m@ Fiery will not connect to ir8500.

    Hey all, I have inherited an iR8500 with an M2 Fiery. I have reloaded\rebuilt the Fiery, tried every cable known to man, but when the Fiery boots, I get the following error.

    Copier Connection Failure - Reboot 85BW-M.

    In troubleshooting, I have gone into the service mode and set the IMAGE-CONT to 4, rebuilt the Fiery, and tried straight through and crossover cables to connect the Fiery to the copier. All to no avail.

    I am stumped on this one, help?

    Thanks in advance.

      everything seems to be in order, they claimed that it worked before they moved. The interface card is present, and lights up as well. I dropped everything and reseated the card and checked for loose and/or missing stuff and found nothing.

      Is there a way to test the card? It is just a standard x-over cable between the Fiery and the unit isn't it?

      Thanks in advance.

        Marc is correct, 3 options for INT-FACE/IMG-CONT
        0= no controller
        1= controller present
        2= future use

          So the correct setting would be 1?

              1) Verify that the imagePASS and the copier are connected via a crossover cable (not a straight through cable or a rollover cable). Test the cable to verify it is good (can connect two computers together with it and have each one try to ping the other's ip address).
              2) Verify that the IMG-CONT service mode setting on the copier is set to the correct value. The IMG-CONT setting can be found in Service Mode under COPIER > OPTION > INT-FACE > IMG-CONT.
              The possible settings are the following:

              IMG-CONT ---- Device Attached to the Copier
              0 -------- Canon controller
              1 -------- imagePASS-M1 v1.0 or v1.1 imagePASSL1
              2 -------- TR Systems/AHT
              3 -------- imagePASS-M1 v2.0, imagePASS-D1/C1/E1/C2/G1
              4 -------- imagePASS-M2 (M1 running M2 v1.0)

              3) Verify copier's firmware is up to date.
              4) Try reseating the boards and connections on/between the 2 devices. Pay special attention tothe NIC in the copier and the internal NIC in the imagePASS (the imagePASS internal daughter NICis called the'Video Board').
              5) Try reinstalling system software on the imagePASS.
              6) Try reinstalling system software on the copier.
              7) Give your laptop an ip address of 10.255.255.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Disconnect the crossover cable from the imagePASS and connect it to your laptop's network interface. Your laptop will now be connected to the copier via the crossover cable. Try to ping the copier's ip address (10.255.255.2). If you get successful replies, the problem is most likely on the imagePASS side. If the copier fails to reply, the problem is most likely on the copier side.
              8) Give your laptop an ip address of 10.255.255.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Disconnect the crossover cable from thecopier and connect it to your laptop's network interface. Your laptop will now be connected to theimagePASS via the crossover cable. Try to ping the imagePASS' ip address (10.255.255.1). If you get successful replies, the problem is most likely on thecopier side. If theimagePASS fails to reply, the problem is most likely on theimagePASS side.
              IP Address Scheme Summary: imagePASS imageRUNNER
              ip address - 10.255.255.1 10.255.255.2
              subnet mask-255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0
              9) Based on the results of steps 7 and 8, you may need to replace the appropriate Network Interface Board. The part number for the imagePASS Video Board (internal NIC) isFE1-5553-000. The imagePASS M2 / M1 / L1 all use the same Video Board (same part number). The part number for the imageRUNNER 5000 / 6000 / 7200 / 8500 / 85 / 105 Ethernet Board (NIC) is FG6-5964-000.

              The correct IMG-CONT is 4 not 1,2, or 3.
              And as i stated in my last post maybe its not the fiery.

                  If you really want to get techie with the whole thing, try this:

                  Connect a hub (NOT a switch) to the RIP and and copier, as well as your
                  notebook. Although not required, give yourself an IP address of 10.255.255.3, and run Wireshark to watch the interaction between them to see if they are talking. (You'll see the traffic regardless of your notebook IP.)

                  Kudos to Screwtape for his explanation; I couldn't have said it better myself!
                  Good job!!
