    Canon ir8500 Network Printing Issue

    Hi Folks-

I used to be able to print via ethernet to my iR8500 from both an iMac and a Dell Laptop. I could also print via the RUI web interface.

Currently, after subsequent 'repair' efforts by a Canon tech, my imagerunner doesn't all printing from any of these methods.

I CAN connect to the printer via web browser (RUI) but the "Print" option is not in the menu on the left side of the screen.

Both computers, try to print, but the message is returned that the Printer is not responding or is busy and will try again in 10 seconds...

FROM the imagerunner Network menu, I can PING the computer just fine.

So, I know that the computer and printer can see each other via ethernet, but for some reason, the RUI interface no longer allows printing nor do my computers print direct to the copier.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if there isn't something in the service menu that could be changed perhaps?

I've tried many configurations of the Network menu already. Again, the really odd thing is that I can see everything via the web interface but the option to print is no longer listed in the web interface....

    help.
    thanks

problem may not be your network

ask them if they change the hardisk or firmware of your machine.

they might have changed it to a basic machine (copy function only) that is why you cannot see the printer.

The Direct Print option is only available if the Canon Multi-PDL Printer Kit is installed. Is this kit installed. What version of system software does this unit have. If it has a kit installed check some if the hardware on the main controller and confirm that everything is seated well, I see what you are trying to explain with the print option thru rui. As sgcopiertech noted confirm the firmware is correct.

Yes, there is a Network board installed. It does appear that when the tech was out they didn't install the proper software maybe...

I now notice that NIB, PS/PCL, and LIPS are all listed as "--.--" meaning there is nothing installed I presume.

Is there a way for me to install this or do I need to call the tech back?

I don't know if it is possible or not, what do you think Screwtape?, but tabstogo may have hit the nail on the head with the scenario of loading the regular software version on the hard drive, and not the "N" version. That would explain why the nib, ps/pcl, and lips values would be blank, as there is no support for those things in the "C" version of the software. I have never tried to do this, loading basic software onto a networked copier, so I do not know if it is impossible to do. That would also probably explain why the Print button was missing in the left margin of RUI.

So much for the technical aspect of this conversation, now onto the customer perspective side. I know that if I had serviced a copier, that could previously print, and now can't, that the customer would expect me to rectify the situation at no additional cost to the customer. The "Canon rep" should be able to resolve this issue at their own time and expense!

just my 2 cents worth... ;-)

You don't know the half of it! I've been looking through the work orders for when they did the 'upgrade' of the software. I have many. There were a couple times that this was done in an attempt to solve another issue which they failed to do, and at great expense. (In the end, I am the one that seemingly fixed the copier.)

Thanks for your comments though, I'll wait and see if others chime in and then I'll call the service manager and see where it gets me. I wish I could install/update the software myself since every time they come out it's more money up in smoke.

A few steps should be taken to help determine/resolve this problem:
1.Make sure the boot rom is indeed an "N" type bootrom. Go to, Service Mode>Copier>Version>Boot-Rom, check to see if "N" is displayed next to the version.
                2. Try clearing MMI, Service Mode>Copier>Function>Clear>MMI>OK; power cycle the machine, and then check the PS/PCL version in Service Mode. Clearing MMI will delete all mailboxes, IP Address, E-Mail setup, etc.. Be sure to print these items prior to performing MMI Clear.
3 If still not there, try to delete and re-register the System Software on the Service Support Tool using a different System Software CD.
                4. Connect the Service Support Tool to the unit and Reformat the hard drive. Reload the "N" version System Software followed by the RUI separately.
                5. If Service Mode>Copier>Version>PS/PCL still does not display the version, try another "N" type bootrom and test. If the version is displayed after replacing the boot rom, then the boot rom must be replaced.

If the boot rom is boot rom C try flashing it but as Mrfixit stated this might not be possible. However they are no cases or indications stating that flashing N boot rom to a C is irreversible back to a N chip. The only model that has a special boot is the 7105 which is irrelevant to this case. The worst case scenerio, your gonna need a N chip.

                Good luck!

Thanks! BootROM is 26.44N, so I'm okay there with the N version. I cleared MMI and that gave me a value for NIB of 03.00. Whereas before it was --.--. However, PS/PCL and LIPS still show --.--.

I did check the RUI and Printing is not an option still. I also tried printing from the computers on the network and they still say the copier is "Busy" and will try again...

So, I'll need to have a tech come in with the Service Support Tool and try the other things you suggest. Thanks again!

Most likey then the 8500N firmware needs to be installed and you should be able to print again.
