The copier must have the new style Ethernet Board PCB (NIC) installed. If the copier's firmware (system software) is not up to date, an E740 code will be displayed when the new style NIC is installed in the copier. The solution is to simply update the copier's firmware to the latest versions.
Ethernet Board PCB (NIC):
Old Style - part number FG6-5964-000
New Style - part number FG6-9898-000
Good luck. -
Screwtape is right. Assuming you have the right NIC installed, you need SST and the copier's firmware. This is an old copier so you will need to connect using a IEEE1284 parallel cable (unless you happen to have access to a no longer produced cable called a NetHawk cable). Make sure your parallel port has ECP turned on in both BIOS (usually accessed by something like F10 on startup) and/or in device settings.Comment

E740 can be found in the Service Manual, but the Service Manual omits to mention the NIC issue (that is because the Service Manual hasn't been updated as far as I know).
If upgrading the system software doesn't fix the problem and the NIC isn't faulty, then there is something else you can try. The SM suggests some of the same things as have already been mentioned.
The SM suggests checking the connection between the LAN Card and the main controller PCB. If that's fine, then check if the NIC's faulty. Replace the NIC if it's faulty. If the NIC's fine then replace the main controller PCB.Comment

There's a quick way to check if the system software needing updating is likely to be the reason. Go into Service Mode, by pressing Additional Functions > 2,8 together > Additional Functions > Copier > Display > Version.
MN-CONT should be 41.01 or greater and BOOT-ROM should be 23.40N or later if the new NIC is installed. If one or both of the numbers for MN-CONT and BOOT-ROM are less than the numbers mentioned above then system software out of date is almost certainly the problem.Comment
