Canon IR C3220 scanner "losing time"

I have a Canon IR C3220 with a strange problem. If you put a stack of originals in the df, it will scan some (between 3 & 20) with perfectly. Then suddenly the scanner will "jump position" and start scanning from about the middle of the glass consistenly(but it never errors out) and obviously gives you just the bottom part of the copy. I'm thinking scanner motor. Any thoughts on this?

I have seen this occur before, can't recall if it was actually a 3200 or some other box. If the optics is scanning documents, and the optics binds up on something, (you can usually hear this as it occurs), where the bind occurred becomes the new home position. It only checks for home position at the beginning of a scanning operation, after that it is counting pulses in the stepper motor.

I assume if you stop the job and restart it, it will initially work o.k. till the binding condition occurs. Check your transport mechanism for possible binds or loose cog belt. It could also possibly be in the scanner drive motor. Let us know what you find out!

      Scanner home position

I would clean and lub the scanner rails with scanner lub oil CK0451.Failing that I have also had this due to a faulty scanner motor.

You're lucky to get the doc feeder to feed that many originals, they usually jam after 5 originals.

Check the home position sensor maybe its going bad. If so, the scanner will not detect home position, it might then be moving blind. Also check your sens-cnf setting, COPIER > OPTION > BODY > SENS-CNF. Set this option to 1 and reboot. You have a lot of good suggestions to point you in the right direction, Good luck.

I fix this problem by removing the DF back cover and super glueing the loose disk on the scanner motor. You do not need to remove the motor, you will see the disk loose when you inspect the motor.

            lost home position

Hey, start with your basic optics service . mr fix it and screwtape are telling you to "back up" i like the "hps" line with this box. although the "slipping" timing disc by mtk525(sorry it just appeared) is easy enough to ck. is rare, in i experience, do your cln/lb then "swap out the "hps" good luck!!! gpbear

I've done this plenty to fix the same issue...and if all else fails order a new motor as it comes with the disc.

Thanks for some great insight. I sort of ruled out the HP sensor for now since machine will home if you turn it off and on. I am going out this week to check for binding & the scanner motor disk. I will let you know the results. Thanks again

It is not binding but not staying attached when the scanner is moving. That is why I super glue the disk to the motor that is held on currently with a magnet. I use just a couple drops.

                    re scanner motor

if you don't want to glue the fly wheel you can make the spacer between the magnet and the motor thiner. Canon have a part number for this thiner spacer / flywheel :- FC5-2795-000.
if you order a new motor it comes modified.
