    Canon os

anyone know what Canon uses for the operating system of the copier. I know all about system software etc, but that is not what I am asking here. I am trying to access the hard drive of an irc3200 to extract the mailboxes. The hard drive crashed and cannot be flashed. I have an usb adapter that I can attach the hard drive to. I was able to get the address book no problem. I can see the partitions but I cannot see in them. I tried windows, I tried Linux, all say that the partition is not formatted and wants to know if I want to format it. Of course I say no, because I know it contains information within those partitions. I would like to copy the partition to put it in the new drive or the data, as long as I am able to get it from one hdd to the other. I am a certified Canon tech so I am not new at working on copiers. But cloning etc is new to me, as we just use sst to flash and of course rui to backup. In this case no backup can be made becasue the copier will not come ready with this drive. We did not format the drive due to me wanting to extract the info for the customer. A new hard drive was installed etc and machine is working fine, all I want is the mailboxes from the old drive put on the new drive.
    How can this be done?

Am pretty sure Canon is using DOS base program. Maybe Linux, Unix or Pascal etc.

And I thought all Professional Certified Canon Techs knows this. Just let us know if you have some info.

      thanks

I think the problem is the operating systems you have used dont recognise the filesystem used on the Canon hard drive. Like you I want to find out what it is and when updating the system software I have looked for clues in the 'download shell' but havent found any.

If we knew what the filesystem was we could find a data recovery tool that supports it. In the meantime I suppose you will have to just try some out but I would recommend Paragon Partition Manager, no guarantees this will work but it worked for me on a crashed computer hard drive when many other so called data recovery programs didnt.

You mention that you have tried Linux, does the command 'fdisk -l' give any clues also the text file /etc/fstab is responsible for mounting drives and has a lot of options as described here

        cd9660 An ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem.
        ext2fs A local Linux compatible ext2fs filesystem.
        ffs A local UNIX filesystem.
mfs A local memory-based UNIX filesystem.
        msdos An MS-DOS FAT filesystem.
nfs A Sun Microsystems compatible Network File System.
        ntfs An NTFS filesystem.
procfs A local filesystem containing process information.
swap A disk partition to be used for swapping.
        udf A UDF filesystem.
        vnd A VND image file.

To answer nivssluck, I have yet to find a certified tech who knows what the os is. They dont teach that in class. The best I heard was Linux, but guess that is wrong. . I just tried Linux 4.0 something, now I forgot the name of it. I also tried Puppy Linux, as someone said they have yet to find a hard drive they couldn't mount. Same results. I tried straight DOS too. I am going to try another hard drive to read in case this one is wasted and not able to read it. Maybe the partition is there but data isn't. I was even looking at pc vaccine video how to. looks like it might work.
Skynet, thanks for the info I will investigate and try each one. I am not an expert by no means at data recovery software, but did try acronis editor. I didn't see anything in the partitions. I can only view two partitions. The one that holds the "addresses" which is showing as "I" partition and "spool" folder in the "K" partition. I will try some more tools and programs soon, from skynets info. If I have all that ability to do each one of those os's, I can say I gave it a heck of a try. I dont want to clone the whole disk, only the partiton and data or just data. Maybe if you have suceessfully done it you can tell me how.
In the meantime I will keep plugging away at it until I succeed.

yourown: this is a wild try. clone your crashed HDD to a new HDD and try to boot the machine from it.if that does not work, try to install with sst the system software without formatting the HDD.personally i dont think canon would just allow you to go to the HDD partition and walk away with the mailbox data.

              good luck to you
a machine is only as good as your tech : source:screwtape ; the scary one

There's the canon techs who write the software and the ones we deal with, I believe they dont know in most cases as that information its not needed. What other companies reveal the inner workings of thier products?

On a relaxed Kyocera Taskalfa training course I tried to set a date above 2038 in the copier, mentioned this to the tutor and suggested that the machine might be running a form of Linux. He said it was an interesting obsveration but didnt know...
Months later in the workshop a Taskalfa update reveals a Linux directory structure.

The Fiery H1 that screws to the back pf a CLC4040 family is running a form of Debian but canon wont tell you that.

Back on topic I intend to get a hard drive from a copier and see if I can mount it.
