Hold down keys 1+9 when you start the machine. Hold them until the scan disk screen comes up. It is a blank screen with a small white box in the upper corner. If the scan doesn't progress it is probably the HDD. If it does progress and finish, try rebooting. Have patience, it can take a while to finish, but it should start putting up more little white boxes in just a few minutes. As long as it is showing progress let it run. Try reseatting the RAM and Boot ROM also.
Is the glass half full or half empty? I say neither. The glass is obviously full, full of potential. The potential to hold more water or the potential to quench a thirst. Life is all about how you see it.

Also check in the service manual for the Boot sequence.
This lists the processes that are being started as the bar progresses.
Doing this can help you try to pinpoint which process is not starting as it should.

        process info...

The first part of the process is accomplished by the boot rom, then there is a percepable blink on the screen, and the bar reappears and normally progress is shown. After the blink, it is all code loaded from the hard drive. If it stalls out here, for an oldie like the 6000, you are most likely looking at a toasted hard drive. New drive and fresh load of code should resolve the issue...
