    LC3170

I got a call for intermittent grinding noise/jam from the doc feeder. I have not been there yet (remote location) but I just wanted to get some ideas.
    Thanks!

Check the motor up top that drives the pickup up and down. It should be similar to the LC710. Gear in there gets chewed up.

If it truely is the ADF, that motor will make some racket,, be sure to lube the drive screw on the replacement lift motor asm, as it will happen again if not lubed. It fills the teeth up with the white plastic powder from the worn gears.

Customer may be mistaken about what they call the document too,,
The 710/730 have the transport belts in front of the fuser, driven by a gear train that can make a God awful racket when the gears wear out in the drive cluster in the white plastic housing. I am not sure if the 3170 has this same drive or not. Removing the gears in that housing and turning the belts over so the smooth side is out worked for me a couple of weeks ago. That drive asm does not do a great amount of work and the device will work fine without it...
