    It requires a IEEE1284 cable, not just a plain printer cable. In SST, choose the parallel cable as the connection type from the little pop up screen in the window. Start copier while holding down the 2 & 8 keys to enter download mode.

      Basically an IEEE1284 parallel cable has bi-directional communication. So if you have an old scanner (for example) with a parallel cable it probably uses one of those as scanning requires bi-directional communication as opposed to printing where you only need communication one way.

      SST needs bi-directional communication as the software needs to know whether what it's doing is working or not.

        you would also need to put the prallel port in ECP mode in bios.
        a machine is only as good as your tech : source:screwtape ; the scary one
