You want to print to the copier? Why not just connect the copier to your network?

If you don't have a network port on the copier there's a fair chance you'll need to install the Canon Network Multi-PDL Printer Kit C1 and use SST to update the firmware on the copier.

SST requires you to use a IEEE1284 parallel cable, not an ordinary one. I'm not sure if this works with a PCMCIA to Parallel Port adapter or not.

Can you tell me what version of Windows you have on your laptop?
What kind of laptop do you have (Dell, IBM, Acer)?

The parallel port must be set to ECP from the BIOS. Usually you hit Delete, F10 or F12 when power is 1st turned on to enter the bios menu. It isn't too hard to find the paralle port ECP setting. After you boot up if you don't see "ECP" when you go into device manager it won't work.

Some laptops needed 3 things changed in Device Manager if they had WinXP. In device manager under "ports" the parallel port needed set to LPT1, use any interrupt assigned to the port, and enable legacy plug and play detection. Even though this picture says LPT2, set it to LPT1 (I'm to lazy to find a better pic).

you can use PCMCIA Cardbus to Parallel Port Adapter AND an IEEE1284 Parallel cable./ to flash ir3300

I tried a PCMCIA to Parallel adapter, as my computer has no parallel port, either.

It works great for printing, but no banana with the SST.

When- USB-Adp is not an available option when flashing a device that requires a usb to parallel cable

When updating System Software on an imageRUNNER-iR device that requires an IEEE 1284 parallel printer cable, using a USB to Parallel Nethawk cable does not show as an available option in Service Support Tool even after the drivers of the Nethawk cable is properly installed.

There are certain laptops used in the field by technicians that may exhibit the problem. A workaround is to use a PCMCIA Cardbus to Parallel Port Adapter AND an IEEE1284 Parallel cable.

This is not a Canon USA Inc recommended solution. This workaround is provided as cost effective alternative to replacing a laptop and or reloading laptop operating system in the hope that it might correct the issue with Service Support Tool not making USB-Adp an available interface.

One thing I've noticed with the USB to parallel adapter is when you 1st install it you need to plug it into a working copier and have it recognize the copier and go through the device driver install wizard. I banged my head against a wall the 1st time I used the USB/parallel adapter trying to connect to a dead (E602) ir2800 with SST. After installing/uninstalling and changing settings I gave up and uninstalled the nethawk driver went down the hall to a working ir2800. Plugged the cable in and went through the setup and Viola! SST connected and worked fine. Went back to the dead copier and everything worked fine.

Your laptop comes with Vista......I think you may be SOL with that OS. Any chance you can make it dual boot with Win98?? Or put WinXP on??

You could try a WinXP VM and pass-through the USB to the VM.
