Help needed to setup imagePASS iR-M2 controller on iR105

I need some help troubleshooting. We have a iR105 printer and purchased an M2 controller from the US, as Canon Indonesia could not supply it here. Now their technicians also cannot help to get it up and running as they lack the knowledge.

It comes with crosscable and LAN cable and obviously has 2 network cards. It shipped with System Software CD v2.1 that we have installed again, but the problem persists.

After booting up it displays "connect to imageRunner" but it can't. Then displays "please connect imageRunner". We can only press ok, and it will display "shutting down", "it is now safe to turn off".

When we enter configuration settings during boot up: we have one menu item called "installation" with choices of Parallel, Network and USB. Choosing network will display "ethernet interface is not configured" and can choose "ok" to return.

So basically there are no options for us to configure anything whatsoever as we are missing menus for it. On the printer, we have set IMG-CONT to 3.

Please help to connect this controller to the printer.

PS: With a monitor connected to the controller during boot up, we see LILO 22.2 Loading diablo..........Uncompressing Linux.....Ok, booting the kernel

As you are looking at the back of the copier there are 2 RJ45's. The top one is just a regular LAN port and the lower one is for the crossover cable that goes from the M2 to the ir105.

It seems this one has one LAN port. So far we have used it to print as a network printer. We print newspapers, so need the controller for papers from certain countries.

Your setting should be 4 not 3

Enter service mode by hitting Additional Functions, 2 and 8 simultaneously, then Additional Functions. 2. Select COPIER.
3. Press Option from the tabs on the top of the LCD screen.
4. Select INT-FACE.
5. Press IMG-CONT. It will become highlighted.
6. Hit the number key desired (0, 1, 3, 4). The value will change to the number entered (ex. 3).
7. Press OK and then power cycle the copier.

Teckat is correct on the interface setting - it must be a 4.

The older imagePASSes required a 3.

What you are seeing is "expected behavior", as Canon tech support would say. The imagePASS will not boot until it can talk to the iR105.

I've tried the monitor approach, as well. Once the OS (Linux) starts, you should see nothing else change on the screen. The customized BIOS is set that all peripherals are disabled once the OS starts.

BTW... It's "Loading LILO". "LILO" is an acronym for "Linux Loader".

Have tried both 3 and 4, but booting now results in "local address error". I can only change IP address under IMG-CONT 4 to set an IP range permitted or denied. I read somewhere to put the following settings

10.255.255.2
255.255.255.0
10.255.255.1

Is that true? How do I do that?

edit: I've put IMG-CONT back to 0 and saw that above mentioned IP settings appeared. It seems they were made by the controller, although it produces an error message.

I'm also not sure what is meant by "older" or "newer" controllers. This one may well be a second hand or refurbished one or defect? It's of a specialized e-bay seller in de USA.

Make sure that the cable between the copier and the RIP is the crossover - you may want to try another crossover cable, just to see if that's the issue.

Setting the interface to 4 will automatically set the IP address to 10.255.255.1 (or2 - don't remember which). This address is transparent to you, though, and there is no place for you to view or change it. There is no need to be concerned with these addresses at all.

The imagePASS-M1 would be the older controller, and as I recall, the M2 with the older version of system software would also be. These require the "3" setting.

The tech support from our head office now is afraid the controller has damaged hard- or firmware in our printer. We can ping printer, but not print to it (old situation as network printer, without M2 controller). Is there any specific (version) firmware needed on the iR105 to work with the M2 controller?

***The imagePASS-M2 v1.0 supports the imageRUNNER-7200/8500/85/105.

be moved from any imageRUNNER to another imageRUNNER, be sure to execute a Factory Default
before you connect the imagePASS-M2 v1.0. Executing a Factory Default enables the imagePASS-M2 v1.0
to be connected to another type of copier or printer.

Canon USA>some imagePASS-M2s have been experiencing lock up issues that can appear as a network drop off.

Some imagePASS-M2s were shipped from the factory with a NIC sleep mode setting on the motherboard set to a value of “2”. On most imagePASS-M2s this setting has a value of “0”, and when it is set to “2”, the NIC goes into sleep mode. As a result, the network connection of the imagePASS-M2 may become lost. The installation of the patches will change this setting back to “0”.
To rectify this problem, Canon U.S.A., Inc. is releasing the following patches:
• imagePASS-M2 v2.0 (bootable CD)
o 1-ASV6Y.ps
o 1-B63KJ.ps
• imagePASS-M2 v2.12 (downloadable patch file)
o 1-B63KJ.ps

When installing imagePASS-M2 System Software v1.0 on to an imagePASS-M2, care should be taken not to
install the M2_V100BOT.efi or M2_V100SYS.efi files in the iR-M1 folder



imagePASS M2 use Network Scangear Version 1.4 or higher.
If a previous version of (Color)Network Scangear was installed on your PC which does not meet the corect version required by your imagePASS, you will need to completely uninstall it before installing the latest version.


Verify copier's firmware is up to date. - Try reseating the boards and connections on/between the 2 devices. Pay special attention tothe NIC in the copier and the internal NIC in the imagePASS (the imagePASS internal daughter NICis called the'Video Board').
- Try reinstalling system software on the imagePASS.
- Try reinstalling system software on the copier.
-Give your laptop an ip address of 10.255.255.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Disconnect the crossover cable from the imagePASS and connect it to your laptop's network interface. Your laptop will now be connected to the copier via the crossover cable. Try to ping the copier's ip address (10.255.255.2). If you get successful replies, the problem is most likely on the imagePASS side. If the copier fails to reply, the problem is most likely on the copier side.
-Give your laptop an ip address of 10.255.255.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Disconnect the crossover cable from the copier and connect it to your laptop's network interface. Your laptop will now be connected to the imagePASS via the crossover cable. Try to ping the imagePASS' ip address (10.255.255.1). If you get successful replies, the problem is most likely on thecopier side. If the imagePASS fails to reply, the problem is most likely on the imagePASS side.

You shouldn't have to flash the 105's firmware to get it to talk to the M2. I've never heard of firmware getting damaged just from hooking up an external controller either. Can you give more info about "Can't print"?

There are 2 different print drivers for the 105, one for the M2/M1 and one for the internal controller. They are not compatible.

If you disconnected the M2 then you need to set IMG-CONT back to 0 and power off/on at main switch. I take it your ir105 was already being used as a printer and you are trying to add the M2?
I'm not 100% sure on this but I don't think you can hook up an external controller with type N boot ROM.

I meant to say as you are looking at the back of the M2 there are 2 RJ45's.
Your LAN cable plugs into the top port on the M2. The crossover cable plugs into the bottom port in the M2 and then to the copier. With the external controller hooked up you shouldn't be able to ping the copier, but you can get to the copier's RUI through the M2's web interface.

imageRUNNER 7200/8500/85/105 Copier Boot ROM Part Number>FG3-1715-000

The physical Boot ROM chip in an imageRUNNER 8500 is compliant with the Boot ROM Chip on the imageRUNNER 7200 and imageRUNNER 105. The chips are physically interchangeable between these copier models. The Boot ROM must be flashed to the proper version of firmware.
