        I'm right there with you on getting them pre-made, MrFixit. One advantage in getting factory made ones is that the ends are machine pressed, and are always exactly the same, so there is almost no chance of having an issue.

        Sometimes, though, you simply have no choice.

        Good point on the "use a quality tool" thing.

        I've seen el cheapo crimpers that may be good for 30 or 40 crimps; after that you throw 'em away.

        If you're going to do this on a routine basis, your best bet is to get one with replaceable dies.

        Another tip: Make sure that you use RJ45 connectors for your type of cabling. There are solid and stranded types - using the wrong one will make you nutty. (or, in some cases, nuttiER...)

        Your best bet is to use the ones that are good for solid or stranded; that way you're never out of the right type.
