Play around with your ethernet settings.

To set the imageRUNNER-iR Series to Full Duplex:
    1. From the LCD Display, select Additional Functions.
    2. Select System Settings.
    3. Select Network Settings.
    4. Select Ethernet Driver Settings.
    5. Select Full Duplex or Half.
    6. Press OK.

Also make sure that DHCP isn't enable under IP address settings.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) can drive Canon NIC cards crazy.

In theory, it should not matter, but in reality it does.

As a test, put a small Ethernet switch between the copier and the network.

If it stops falling off, the Canon NIC has an issue with the customer's switch, or some other network hardware component, including bad cabling.

          There is no NIC card.

The ethernet port is built in on the main controller.

That would mean that is main controller would have to be replaced.

The other option you gave is something I would give a shot.

It's unfortunate that most MFP manufacturers integrate the NIC on the main controller (PC companies do, too, for that matter), but that's just the way they're made now. It just makes "popping another one in just to test" a less viable option.

I really doubt that there is a hardware failure with it, though, but rather something that can be solved via a configuration change (or two!).

I always keep a spare switch and a few cables on hand, just for such situations.

I have been told to turn off Multicast Discovery on our boxes, as that seems to create some issues for us. We typically turn this off when we set up the copiers...

The Multicast Discovery is a pain and should be turned off, but this typically causes the copier to reboot on its own.
I would do a continuous ping to see if it is actuallly dropping off the network or just going "offline" a switch might help things out if the cable from the server/rack to the machine is really long as the data might be weak causing a communication issue. But if the ping responses come back ok then I would completely delete that port and driver then start over with the network installation
Accidents don't just happen. They must be carelessly planned.

You will have to hunt around for it, do a Network Report from the Report Settings, and you should see it listed there, it may help pin it down as to where in those setting you may find it ...

Also turn off SNMP at the copier and on the print driver. Turn off SMB if they don't do any Windows printing
