did u just install a Printer Kit ??
The Display will show "Download Mode" or "Download Standby" even though the imageRUNNER was not put into download mode. This may also occur after installing the updated Printer Kit-J1 [0446B005AA]. Turning the power on and off will not reset the message.
flashing the machine to the latest system software may resolve the unusual message.
Note: Printer Kit-J1 [0446B005AA] requires the new system software v60.02 be installed on the imageRUNNER.
or re-flash the BOOT ROM with at least version 60.02.
Installing System Software on the imageRUNNER 2020 / 2016 Series

The following modules must be installed from a PC connected to the copier via a USB cable using the Service Support Tool:
- System (main controller) *
- Boot (boot program)
- PCL (PCL printer kit -J1)
* The main controller also controls the reader.
To flash the Finisher -U1 (Fin_U1), you must connect the PC to the finisher via a RS232C straight cable and the Downloader PCB (FY9-2034) using the Service Support Tool.
Due to copyright restrictions, the 2020/2016 System Software is not available for electronic download. Please order this 2020/2016 system software as a service part using Part Number FY9-4240-003.
To enter Download Mode on the imageRUNNER 2020 / 2016 Series:
1. Hit Additional Functions, 2, 8, and Additional Functions to enter Service Mode.
2. Press the + or - key to scroll through the Service Mode options.
3. Scroll to '#DOWNLOAD'.

Use it to clear all settings/registration data except the counter (denominator, numerator)
To perform an 'ALL CLEAR', enter service mode by pressing additional functions > 2 then 8 and additional functions again. Scroll to #Clear and press ok. Next,select ALL and press ok. The imageRUNNER may power cycle itself.
Note*
After performing the ALL CLEAR, the imageRUNNER will be set to factory default and user inputted values will be lost.
Firmware ver= don't u have a Spec Report ??
To print a Spec Report from the imageRUNNER 2016 / 2016i / 2020 / 2020i:
1. Enter Service Mode by hitting Additional Functions > 2 > 8 > Additional Functions.
2. The Service Mode screen appears displaying [#SSSW].
3. Hit the Left Arrow 6 times. [REPORT] is displayed. Press OK.
4. Press the Right Arrow 1 time. [REPORT OUTPUT] is displayed. Press OK.
5. Hit the Right Arrow 5 times. [SPEC LIST] is displayed. Press OK.
6. The Spec Report is printed out.

I've just stumbled upon your posts here, but am wondering if it would be possible to flash my iR2016 using a Mac. (I haven't installed anything new at all, but don't have access to a Windows PC.)

read somewhere about loading XP on Mac w/Boot Camp installed & using SST

Ah yes Boot Camp, though just now after I turned the iR2016 off (unplugged it) and back on, it's behaving itself again... I'm keeping my fingers & toes crossed until further notice.
