That's right - the language must be a match. (You wouldn't like it if you could mix and match.)

My recommendation would be to work with the gentleman to have him download the correct driver from the Canon Japan site, and have him install it. I really can't imagine it not being on the site.)

I don't know about you, but I sure can't read Japanese.

I had this happen with a GP200 back in 1996 or so, and that's exactly what we did. (Back when Windows 3.1 roamed the Earth...)

Just noticed - your post said that you tried the English version of the XP driver - that won't work in ANY language.

I still maintain (with all due respect to Teckat) that the language must match.

PCL5/PCL5e (the latter being an extended version) is an escape-based language, using an ASCII representation, but is relatively unstructured

PCL6 is a completely different language, uses a binary representation, and is much more structured; for these reasons, it is much more difficult to edit a PCL6 print stream

PCL 6 driver - PCL 6 uses a new modular architecture that can be easily modified for future HP printers and exhibits the following characteristics:
                  • Returns faster to the application after spooling data
                  • Prints complex graphics faster
                  • Data streams are more efficient for reduced network traffic
                  • Better WYSIWYG printing
                  • Improved print quality
                  • Truer document fidelity
                  • Complete backward compatibility

The PCL 6 language is very different from the earlier versions of PCL. One significant difference is the manner in which the commands are sent to the printer. Use the PCL 6 driver to take full advantage of the printer features. The PCL 6 driver is recommended unless backward compatibility with previous PCL drivers or older printers is necessary.

PCL 5 drivers - The PCL 5c driver provided the commands needed to support printing in color. Use the PCL 5e driver to preserve compatibility with documents created for older printers.

Short answer is most of the time, PCL5 is the desired driver, works for almost every situation. We use PCL6 when some application does something strange to a print job, otherwise 5 is the driver of choice...
