    Couple of questions

What does MEAP stand for and what purpose does it serve in mfps?

Does Canon Direct (CBS) use remote tech in e automate?

MEAP - Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform.
Based on JavaVM, you can write your own (after giving Canon the rights) or buy an application to install and run on the MFP. From what I understand the common applications are for managing the device, custom scanning, or variable print data.

And I can't answer your question about CBS or e automate.

MEAP is an applications development platform that allows the creation of embedded applications for Canon's Multi-Functional Peripheral devices (MFP's). Custom applications can be created to execute on the devise itself. Developers can create JAVA applications that can then be installed and run on the MEAP-enabled MFP's .
The first launch of MEAP-enabled products encompassed a range of 4 models, the iR2220i, iR3320i, iR5020i and iR6020i.
MEAP applications can do many things including, but not limited to, the following:
      - Control device functions (print, copy, scan, fax, mailboxes)
      - Get/set device settings
      - Display a user interface on the device console
      - Control device hard key
      - Display a user interface on a remote web browser
      - Networking functions
      - Data encryption
MEAP has the potential to be anything you want it to be and Canon has the technology to incorporate all types of diverse applications.

Does this open the device up to be hacked?
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

"Does this open the device up to be hacked?"

IT, as it can for any device on the network, can open a portal limiting surfing to secure sites from particular devices, just has to come up with the rationale for a set of rules that can be applied without excessive administrative duties. Similar to print management - IT can accept aliasing or spoofing for a portal to get the benefits of managing a network of copiers. My company can base contracts for supplies on meter reads, to the extent the reading is done accurately, even make money. The big hurdle is getting the customer to see the benefits and not as a threat to the security of the network.
