Check the sensor that detects that the front door of the finisher is closed. Sounds silly, but you most likely have also been experiencing door open jams in the Finisher. Usually it gets knocked out of its socket and will read closed until any vibration or the door is pressed on.
The glass maybe half full, but less is more...
Printer + Fax + Copier = Jack Of Many Trades,
      but Master Of None
Color Copier = Not A Color Printer
InkJet MFP = Not A Fax Machine
      B/W Copier = Not A Press
Finisher = Deal Closer (salesman, not accessory)
Copier Tech = Admin's Stress Ball (Scapegoat)

replace the buffer stopper arm on the finisher the small mylars get out of place. Also check your machine and finisher firmware. You may have one with older firmware as this was an issue on this model about 4 years ago and a firmware update was released to help with this issue....copier losing communication with the finisher.
Accidents don't just happen. They must be carelessly planned.

Finisher controller PCB/Host machine DC controller PCB
          1) Does it improve when the host machine power switch is turned OFF/ON?
          YES : End
          Wiring
          2) Is the wiring between the finisher controller PCB and host machine DC controller PCB normal?
          NO : Repair the wiring.

Sounds Like a Typical Canon Band-Aid Approach.
Keep Buying those Controllers- Canon needs the Money !!

There is a photo interrupt and also a microswitch to detect that the front door is closed on the finisher. If the photo interrupt is blocked the machine is happy initially, even if the microswitch is not closed, until it has to turn a motor or something on. I have seen bent actuators right at the switch on practically every Canon finisher. Not on the door, but at the switch itself. A 7105 V2 finisher will give you a horizontal registration error at start up if the switch is open and the photo interrupt blocked.Won't tell you to close the finisher door. I guess what i am saying is if you get any weird finisher faults on Canon finishers(copiers also for that matter),look closely at interlocks. They usually carry the DC that makes everything work.
