If a Canon IR C3100 runs out of yellow toner, shouldn't i be able to print in black?

If black toner is still left in the machine, you can continue to print and copy in black and white. However, if the print or copy job is interrupted because cyan, yellow or magenta runs out, printing and copying is only possible in black and white for functions other than those being used for the interrupted job. If toner runs out during a job, printing of that job will resume after replacing the toner cartridge.

set the default color to black
First, press the Auto Color Selection tab and select "Black".

      Select the Additional Function Button
Select The Copy Settings Button and go to the Second Screen

      Press the Standard Settings Button
Select Store ( A message will come up asking you if you wish to store this setting.)

      Select "Yes" Store in Memory
      Press the Done Button

Press the Done Button again in order to go out of the Additional Function Screen
