This happens a lot, usually a firewall is blocking the DIAS service. Make sure Driver Information Assist Service (DIAS) is running and not blocked by your firewall.

BINGO!!!
Accidents don't just happen. They must be carelessly planned.
I used the UFR driver for w2k and I was surprised that there was no exe file, so I had to use the inf file. Is DIAS a utility that has to be downloaded and installed separately?
DIAS is running ... tried from my laptop with a cross over cable ... cannot get the device status and cannot verify the user name password for account tracking....

DIAS - (Canon Driver Information Assist Service)- DIAS is a new version of driver VDC (Canon NetSpot Suite Service) that is specialized in the retrieval of information from the devices. DIAS is supported with the PCL5e/5c v6.20, PCL6 v4.20, PS3 v2.20, and Fax v3.20 drivers (these versions or higher).
* See the Related Knowledge base Article 49479 (see link on side) for a driver to device compatibility chart. DIAS can eliminate problems raised by sharing the VDC service with other applications (i.e. the version of the VDC installed by the drivers won't be overwritten by an utility installing the VDC). DIAS is comprised of:
1. Built-in DIAS (DIAS DLL) - is a part of the driver module and is installed with the driver. Allows an auto run of the device information retrieval process during a driver installation initiated using the Add Printers/Installer feature (pre-config). This feature saves the user the need to manually get configuration information from the device in order to use the installed options.
2. DIAS Service- is to be installed on a Print Server only. The Print Server requires this service so that the clients can retrieve device information from a shared printer on that server. DIAS Service is installed via the driver installer. With DIAS, the following types of information can be retrieved:
Available options (to be set in the printer's properties).
Authenticity of a user account for job accounting (to be retrieved for each job accounting-enabled print job).
New DIAS features/capabilities:
Installer will automatically perform a device information retrieval (Pre-Config/ Get Device Status) operation before completion of the installation process.
No need to install the DIAS setup.exe unless a shared printer is used. Unlike VDC, DIASsetup.exe is to be installed on a Print Server only.
DIAS can co-exist with printers that are still using VDC.
All imageRUNNER-iR Series, All Color Enabled imageRUNNER Models, imagePASS C1 / C2 / D1 / E1 G1 / H1 / J1 / L1 / M1 / M2 / M3 / S1 / S2 Cannot Use the Get Device Status or Job Accounting Features through a Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows 2003 Server
After loading the print driver on the Windows NT / 2000 / 2003 Server and pulling it down to the Windows clients, I cannot use the Get Device Status or Job Accounting features from the clients.
Solution :
Make sure the Canon NetSpot Suite Service (VDC) or the Driver Information Assist Service (DIAS) is installed and functioning on the server. The service you will use depends on the version of the driver you have installed. The driver versions and services are listed below:
DriverNetspot Suite Service (VDC)Driver Information Assist Service (DIAS) PCL 5e version 6.11 or earlier version 6.20 or later PCL 6 version 3.41 or earlier version 4.20 or later Postscript version 1.31 or earlier version 2.20 or later Check the Services Applet on the server to make sure the service is started and set to automatic (make sure you reboot after installation - this is required for the service to run properly). Verify that the server can successfully use the Get Device Status and Job Accounting features from the driver. If the server cannot use these features successfully, then check the following:
Make sure the printer port you are utilizing is an Standard TCP/IP printing port or an UNIX LPR port. TCP/IP is required for the Canon NetSpot Suite Service/Driver Information Assist Service to communicate with the imageRUNNER. The Canon NetSpot Suite Service or Driver Information Assist Service will not work utilizing Windows Printing (SMB).
Make sure you are using the latest version of the Canon NetSpot Suite Service or Driver Information Assist Service (both are located in the latest Canon PCL5e or PCL6 Printer Driver Setup program) and the latest print driver version.
* The latest Canon PCL5e or PCL6 Printer Driver Setup program is available on the e-support site.
If the features still fail, try uninstalling the print drivers and NetSpot Suite Service/DIAS using the Uninstall program that comes with the Setup program, and then start the entire installation process over again using the Setup program.
Note: When installing the NetSpot Suite Service or Driver Information Assist Service, be sure to turn off any actively scanning anti-virus software that may be running on the server. This may interfere with the installation.
Once the server itself can use the Get Device Status and Job Accounting features successfully, we are now ready to focus on the clients. The print driver on the server is being shared out and various Windows clients are connecting to the share and pulling down the print driver. If the client cannot use the Get Device Status and Job Accounting features successfully through the server, then check the following:
Check the length of the printer's share name on the server. The printer's share name cannot exceed 12 characters in length. This exceeds the length of the share name field used in the communication. If the share name is longer than 12 characters, then shorten the share name to 12 characters or fewer.
Try logging onto the client with an administrative account that has full rights granted on the server. Try using the Get Device Status and Job Accounting features again. If they work successfully, then the previous user may have not had sufficient rights to the share on the server.
Verify that the clients are using the same version driver as the server. If the client is using a different driver version, manually delete the driver files from the client and then pull the correct driver down from the server.
Note: The NetSpot Suite Service\Driver Information Assist Service only needs to be installed on the server. It does not need to be installed on each of the individual clients.
* If the server is also running NetSpot Console and/or NetSpot Device Installer, it may be necessary to uninstall NetSpot Console and NetSpot Device Installer, uninstall the print drivers and VDC/DIAS service using the Cleanup option of the Uninstaller program , reboot, and reload the drivers and VDC/DIAS service.

All imageRUNNER-iR Series, All imagePASS Series, All Color Enabled imageRUNNER Models, imagePRESS C1 / C6000 / C6000VP / C7000VP Cannot Print to the imageRUNNER After Getting the Device Status
The print driver is installed, set up and printing fine to an imageRUNNER. However, after getting the Device Status in the printer driver, the user is unable to print. The imageRUNNER is set up to require Department IDs for copying but to allow print jobs with unknown IDs to print from the network. The user did not want the network print jobs to use the Department ID feature.
The problem has been found to be with the driver configuration after pulling the Device Status in the print driver. When Department ID Management is enabled on the copier and it does not include a default Department ID and password, the driver populates the Job Accounting check box automatically as shown below.
The user should be prompted to enter this info when printing. However, if they hit OK and send the job without a Department ID and password, the imageRUNNER will drop the job without printing it. The printer will do this even with the Department. ID feature set to Allow jobs with unknown IDs and passwords. It does this is because the driver will send a null value to the printer in the field of the packet for the Department ID and password. It interprets this as a Department ID and password and tries to match this value with a value in its database. If no match for the null value appears in the database, no match is found and the job is lost.
The only solution to this is to turn off Job Accounting every time you get Device Status or to set the driver up with a default ID and password and to un check the Confirm ID/Password box so the user never gets prompted for a Department ID and password.

All imageRUNNER-iR Series, All imagePASS Series, All imageRUNNER LBP Series, All Color Enabled imageRUNNER Models, Cannot 'Get Device Status' on Canon NDPS printers.
When performing 'Get Device Status' on a Canon NDPS printer driver, the following warning message pops up.
Workaround :
This happens when you perform Get Device Status by going to the Printers and Faxes folder, right clicking the printer object, then clicking Properties (see figure 1).
Figure 1
Going to the 'Device Settings' tab, click the 'Get Device Status' button (see figure 2).
Figure 2
Click 'Yes' in the Confirmation prompt
Finally this warning window (see figure 4) will appear indicating that there was a problem performing the specified printer driver function.
Figure 4
In order to correct the problem the PortSet utility needs to be run on the affected workstation.
Using the attached compressed (PortSet.zip) file, download and extract all the contents of that file to a folder in your local hard drive. With winzip installed in your workstation, double-click the compressed file. Highlight all the files in the pane and click the 'Extract' icon (see figure 5).
Figure 5
In the 'Extract to': field, type the location; in our example, it is C:\canon, then click 'Extract.' (see figure 6).
Figure 6
Now, to configure the NDPS printer using the PortSet utility, double-click PortSet.exe, (see figure 7).
Figure 7
Highlight the NDPS printer and click 'Modify' (see figure 8).
Figure 8
Choose 'TCP/IP' protocol and then enter the ip address of the copier in the Network Address field. Click OK. (see Figure 9).
Figure 9
Finally, click 'OK' (see figure 10). Once the port set tool is executed, you will be able to perform 'Get Device Status' on the installed NDPS printer.

When I installed the driver I checked the box for installing DIAS and selected `yes`for windows firewall exception ...
Re-installing the system software makes more sense but I do not have access to Canon anymore and do not have the system tools to install the latest firmware and upgrade machines.
DIAS is running ... tried from my laptop with a cross over cable ... cannot get the device status and cannot verify the user name password for account tracking....
Thanks!
I have had this with a couple of installations, particularly where IT people who know a lot better than copier techs installed a unit.
1st thing uninstall from your laptop, install using the setup on the driver disk.
2. Make sure DIAS is installed.
3. The step that fooled me 1st off..... make sure you select the right model. There may be several versions of the same model, only one of them will work 100%. e.g IRC3170 and IRC3170 eur.
