you can scan with software like abby fine reader, microsoft office, corel draw, or adobe photosop.
first in the machine chose scan-online,after that
in abby fine reader, select scanner- chose to network scan gear-scan.
    in microsoft office word 2010,go to insert-clip art-organize clips-file-add clips to organizer-from scanner or camera-select scanner-scan.
    in corel draw,file-acquire image-select source-chose to network scan gear-scan

I am assuming you have never scanned with any Canon before with pull scan. What you have installed is a Twain compatible scanner driver. What this means is that programs that work with Twain compatible scanners will now list the Canon as an option for scanning (usually under file). In order to see the copier/scanner the machine you must go to Scan from the main copier screen and choose on-line. The machine will now wait for you. Papers can be put in to the feeder or laid on the glass. After you choose the application you want to scan with (ie adobe pro etc). You have the scan option under file. You will likely have to select network scanner gear 2.1 from the scanner list box then you be presented with the scan gear dialog box to finish off the job.

Your honestly better to go get yourself a user manual. Pull scanning is really an old way to work and with newer programs like office 2010 your not going to have an easy time. If you have no choice then fine. But serious go get a manual for your own good. It will be better for reference.

There is no application that ships with the unit. If you can get your hands on paperport you'll be better off. I can not think of any freeware applications that use the twain driver as a tie in. Maybe a search of cnet.com may find you that free program. Paperport would be the best for the price. Look for coupon code on the net for better prices.
