Its the Service manual can tell how; at " Upgrading"
Your printed version may have this omitted but not the electronics pdf version. And of course the SST user manual will explain in more detail. Get these 2 pdf files.

Dear andhy, ymmtech's advice 2u is spot on. Take it seriously. Since in your own words u r a newbie, and u r knowledge about copiers is limited, I advise that you first ally yourself with experienced guys . Also get hold of the service manuals and ofcourse sst (service support tool.)
Take sometime to study these manuals inorder to gain insight into the technical theories of these machines.
Learning to use the SST for firmware upgrade can be a tricky experience for a beginner , it takes sometime of practice to master it, but with determination and confidence, as well as the desire to learn it can be very rewarding.

If the HDD you put in was new then it should last a good 4-5 years without any issues. Unless the power has a lot of noise on it or the customer has a lot of power outages...this will shorten the life of any HDD.
Accidents don't just happen. They must be carelessly planned.
