    The ugly irc3100

A customer / friend has an ugly ir3100 color machine.

My knowledge is pretty much =zero on these machines.
I hated them since their creation and I never worked on them.

However except for yellow banding on the middle of the page, he now has an immidiate problem. He puts new toner (yellow + magenta) after one hour or two machine says "No Toner".

Is this a known issue with this device ?

Specify toner replacement for the particular color that is coming up empty by following the steps below.

to go in Level 2/ hit (*)(2) after u enter Service mode Level 1

    1. In service mode (Level 2) [COPIER> Option> BODY> T-CRG-SW], set it to "1" and turn the power OFF/ON.

    2. A button "Specified Toner Replacement" appears under user mode [Adjustment/Cleaning].

    3. Press the "specified toner replacement button" and select the color which has been changed or the color that is showing no toner.

    4. Open/close the toner supply port cover and let the machine cycle through its rotations.

    5. Verify that the specified color is now showing toner.

    6. Reset the service mode setting T-CRG-SW in step one to "0" and power the machine off and back on.

Here is another tidbit on this Model>>>>>>>>>

    Question :
Why Is the Specified Toner Replacement screen missing?

    Answer :
When the "Add toner" message displays, the rotary automatically moves to the correct position, to allow installation of a new toner cartridge. Upon installing the cartridge, the rotary will turn to add the toner to the developer unit and the "Add toner" display will go away.

Should a user want to install a toner cartridge before the "Add toner" message displays, or if the rotary has stopped in the wrong position, the user can go to Additional Functions mode to move the rotary to the correct toner add position. Perform the following in User Mode.

This screen is located at ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS>ADJUSTMENT/CLEANING>SPECIFIED TONER REPLACEMENT

To make this screen available to the user go to Service Mode level 2, COPIER>OPTION>BODY>T-CRG-SW
If you set the value to "1", the Specified Toner Replacement screen will be made available to the user.

I sent a new guy to do this procedure and the machine brings up this error "E000020-0081".

I know it relates to patch sensor. But I have already cleaned it. I am afraid the developer material might have lost its powers.

The strange thing is that machine has done only 4k.

        E020-0081

When the window of the light-emitting/receiving segment of the patch image read sensor (FH7-7629-000 [PS23]) becomes solid with stray toner, the machine will not be able to accurately measure the density of the patch image off the drum.

To avoid the problem, the machine checks the patch image read sensor for soiling. While initial multiple rotation is under way, the machine measures the light from the surface of the drum without depositing any toner on it (drum background measurement); it will assume that the window is soiled if the measurement is lower than a specified level (COPIER>DISPLAY>DENS>P-SENS-P> optimum range: 400~600), thus indicating an error code (E020-0081) and stopping its operation.

First clean the Image Patch Sensor PS23 and re-seat connector J2086, if the problem persists replace PS23 or the Drum to resolve the error code.

Sub code 0081 states that the P-SEN-P is less than 255 when a base (drum face) of patch detection is read out.
In other words patch read is too low when primary is charging drum. When troubleshooting these type of codes (E-020's) most technicians will try seeing a patch being developed on the ITB belt.
No patch is usually due to the fact that the primary never came up to proper voltage which cause the machine to never turn on the laser. No laser no patch.
You can check the P-SEN-P reading in service mode Copier / Display / Dens / P-SEN-P. If value is less than 255 then go to service mode level two Copier / Display / Dens / P-LED-DA if reading is 90 or above then patch sensor is dirty or scratched. If reading is below 90 then drum unit is bad.

u could have a damaged or loose connector

        or to add>>>>

Transfer Belt Assembly Tension Arms may be damaged, preventing proper tension from being placed on the Intermediate Transfer Belt.

This document may help, its a flowchart for diagnosing 020 errors with this machine.

            Hi Fellas,

            A bit of update.

I cleaned the sensor - it was full of magenta.
            Machine ok. After 2 copies : E0020-01A9
Turned off than on. Machine working.

I checked the clutch. The clutch is ok. The values in SM are ok.

Right now is printing. What I am afraid that will happen (and it will happen) is the start of yellow showing up in the middle of the page (sub scanning direction) and starting to grow.

What is strange to me: I checked the developer rolls.
In the middle the roll is emptier while to the sides is filled with toner. I mean, in the middle I can see the iron shaft of the developer.
It is the same for the 4 developers.
But the machine has done only 4K copies !

            Any idea...
