so u mean Full Color Black ??

The Suitable Black Ink for Media

-You can select either photo black ink or matte black ink as the printer black ink to use. The two types of black ink differ in their suitability for different media types, and in their
characteristics. Carefully examine the print frequency by media type and the print application before selecting the type of black ink to use.

If you print with the black ink that is not suited to the type of media, this can cause unsatisfactory results in printing and foul the media or printer with ink

    ink.JPG

    Black Ink Types and Characteristics

    Photo Black (Bk) Ink (BCI-1421Bk)
This ink has excellent gloss and black density for glossy media and proof media. Nearly all types of media can be printed, including glossy media.
    Matte Black (MBk) Ink (BCI-1441MBk)
This ink has excellent black density for standard paper, fine art media, and matte media. It cannot be used for glossy media.

    Color Adjustments
Open the printer driver dialog box from the Print dialog box of the application.
Confirm that the Main sheet is displayed.
On the Main sheet select Color Mode >> then Color
Color Mode presents these following items for selection.
    Important
**Monochrome (Photo) can be selected for Color Mode
only if one of the following types of paper is selected:

Glossy Photo Paper/Semi-Glossy Photo Paper/ Heavyweight Glossy Photo Paper/Heavyweight
    Semi-Gloss Photo Paper/Fine Art Photo/Fine Art Heavyweight Photo/Fine Art Textured/Japanese Paper Washi
    Color Mode--------- Content
    Color Prints---------- in color.
Monochrome (Photo):Provides stable monochrome photo printing with minimal tone change
and enables detailed adjustment of gray scale gradations and color tones.
    Monochrome Prints------ in monochrome.
    Solid Color
----------------Printing is limited to colors only. Use to print sharply thinly-colored fine lines.
Black Only---------------All colors other than white are printed black.

-Select Manual Color Settings then click the Color Settings button.
Manual Color Settings are enabled when Color,Monochrome (Photo), or Monochrome is selected
    for Color Mode.
The Color Settings dialog box opens.
Confirm that the Color Adjustment sheet is displayed, then click the Object Adjustment... button.
The Object Adjustment dialog box opens.
Select the item that you want to adjust: Image, Graphics, or Text.
Note that for this printer driver all the items (Image, Graphics, Text) are selected as the default settings.
Click the OK button to close the Object Adjustment dialog box.
Drag the slide bar for the custom settings to the left or right to perform adjustment.
Alternatively, click the arrow buttons in the field for entering values, or enter the value directly, to perform adjustments.
Color Adjustment presents the following items for selection.
    Color Adjustment----------Content
Cyan,Magenta,Yellow----------You can calibrate the hues for Cyan,Magenta,Yellow-
Brightness----------Adjusts brightness from the darkest to brightest colors so none are lost in
the brightness of the printed image.
Contrast----------Adjusts the relative contrast from brightest to darkest colors.
Saturation----------Adjusts the vividness of colors from dull to extremely vivid.
Gray Tone Adjustment----------Adjusts grayscale from cool colors (blue tones) to warm colors (red
    tones).

As you change each item, the image of the Preview on the left changes to reflect the adjustment. The
Original shows the appearance of the initial settings, and the Preview reflects the current settings.
Even after the settings have been changed using the Color Adjustment sheet, if the Manual Color
Settings check box is not selected, the Color Adjustment sheet settings will be disabled. If you do
not want to adjust the colors, un-check the check box.

Click the OK button to close the Color Settings dialog box.

        Get a freaking RIP !!!

When you select "photo paper" the printer WILL USE more than BK to print black.

I am trying to print on large vinyl banner a Digital High res B&W photo.
The Canon Poster software is really good for color but were not finding a selection to just print true B&W.
greyscale and monochrome are the only selections we find.

I will keep looking for the black only selection, we have to keep stopping the print because the printer is trying to use color
and were wasting a lot of expensive banner material.

What we were told to do by Canon techs is to select the synthetic paper selection to print banners on the vinyl banner media.

It should be a simple process to do this but no luck so far.
Thats as clear as I can be on this.

A freaking RIP !!! should not be necessary

""A freaking RIP !!! should not be necessary""

            Ain't someone angry ?

If you already know the answer - why do you ask the question ?

Under Windows driver that printer will use more than black ink to print b/w in photo paper (I guess for vinyl too)

You can follow my advice and "get a freakin RIP" or try your luck again....

are u using Cut Sheets of Vinyl media ??? or from a Roll ?
Use Photo Black INK and do not use Matte Black ink for GLOSSY FINISHES
Photo Black (Bk) Ink Tank BCI-1421BK

              Canon imagePROGRAF Printer Driver
Windows /or Mac _for Long format (Banner) select Heavyweight Coated Paper
              Standard/Saturation/ Contrast: +10 Saturation: +5

              In PRINT DRIVER
Select>COLOR MODE>BLACK ONLY=All areas other than white are printed in
              black.

what is so hard about this ???

                Thanks T,
                Roll vinyl Banner
                We use the photo BK
MBK can be a problem and clog the print head if not used often.
Can be a print head killer @ $600 each MBK is not worth it.
                I have the manual.

We were using the Canon Poster artist, its very good for putting the images simply and very easy to use.
BUT it really is setup to use a lot of ink regardless but very effective.

                Heavy weight coated paper! ok.
as I said before the Canon tech told us to use the synth paper setting

I will give that a try

                  Hey T,
I looked all over the w8400 driver for the Black only.
It has the color mode but only monochrome and color selections.
there is no Black only on the selections from Canon in the driver that I can find.
I know this printer pretty well and looked all over the settings, even on the 8400 itself.
                  NADA.
its a 2006 and the update for the new print head.

using BK ink of course and selected the heavy coated paper.
almost every printer I know has a black ink only selection
                  but not this one

As you said "whats so hard about this"
You are correct in that statement

                  This should be very easy.
I must be missing something but just cant seem to find a Black only box, setting or selection in the software

                  any help ?
                  Thanks
                  P

My guess is that I dont have the right driver,
                      IN COLOR MODE
                      all I see is

                      Color
                      Monochrome

                      Thats it for selection
                      There is no
                      Monochrome photo
                      or solid color
                      or black only

                      Just the 2 selections

I did , and Dl ed them installed them and went to the driver properties,
found the color mode and still just to 2 selections.
This is something I must really be missing here

I have read all you sent and I am very clear about this.
The Software version update is v 1.31 and it did update
The plugins for PS CS4 ok
The Win-drv 350-2 I will have to look at again

But when I select color mode "color"
there is no further choice I can see
                            just
                            Color
                            Monochrome

Sorry to keep bugging you but as you said
                            "whats so hard about this"

Just a simple B&K only choice to print Photo black only!

Thanks again for trying to help
