    IR2200i SMTP issue

    Hi Yah!

I just bought an IR2200i. The machine is working fine, doing copy jobs, printing over the net, scanning etc. I can access it via the remote UI and I am sure that the basic IP settings are ok.

However, it does not send any images via the mail send function.

I have added a valid smtp/pop3 account in the email/i-fax setting tab. It pulls mails properly from the mailbox, but does not send any. Error code is 801.

As I can access the mailserver log, I found that the ir2200i apperently does not try to log into the postfix(SMTP) server. Is it an expecting an open relay? For security reasons, I cannot leave the mailserver open.

Studing the manuals and searching the web yielded no results. Does anyone has an idea what I have configured wrong or how to resolve it.

    Thank you,
    Joh

      Hi, Jon

iR2200i is one of the few models that do not offer "SMTP Authentication" when it connects to mail server.

You could tried scope iR2200i's IP Address / MAC address out your mail server, but I'm not sure what would the security impact to your mail server.

        Hi, Jon

I might be wrong about no SMTP Authentication for iR2200i, just return from a Customer's iR3320 which allow that settings to enter. Although different model, you might want to upgrade your firmware. My iR3320's firmware is version 60.03

          Hello!

Thank you, to everybody who replied to this thread.

KL568 was right, the copier model does not support smtp authentication.

The issue is resolved by using the "SMTP after POP" authentication method. For details you can search wikipedia, where this method is explained. In short: the copier will poll the mail server every two minutes for mail. In a certain time period after the poll, the (IP of the) copier can send mails via SMTP without further authentication. This is my temporary resolution.

I will not keep secret, that there might be a different way to authenticate. The copier posts a HELO within the SMTP handshake. There is an authentcation method in postfix called "check_helo_access". The copier sends his machine name + the domain name (e.g. mycanoncopymachine.mydomain.com) as the HELO. If you choose a cryptic name for the the machine and allow it to login without authentication, this might work very well, too.

          Best regards,
          Joh
