    Canon 5180

Have a 5180 after powering it up the status bar starts on the display then stops and freezes at that point, won't do anything else. Any help would be very grateful thanks.

Yes...very important how far progress bar goes before freezing..disconnect all accessories,fx,network print.Re-seat ram, boot, pcb mount screws on d-con and main-con..might just need to re-install system software

maybe just need to plug in the reader cable all the way, thats on the back side of machine. happened to me a few times, sits about 3/4 way across on progress bar when i find out i forgot to plug it in.
does it have an image pass on the back of machine? the copier does checks like a computer does to check all places, memory, hard drive, system software and more.

Machine reads boot rom, telling it to perform self-test,then tells it to write system software into SRAM from the hard drive, which the main control uses to start up the machine. It initializes various components like the reader,etc...like freeyourown said, if it craps out around 3/4 it could be reader plug or others..making it that far means that machine has booted...if it freezes early reseat ram boards, sub boards, boot room, hard drive to main pcb connectors,re-install system software
