Canon IR 5000 belt noise from back & front to back blank lines on copy

This unit makes this noise in the print and copy mode. I took off the upper right rear panel that covers the network
connectors, and looked through the crack at the main drive belt.
When I run just the main drive motor from part check it runs smooth and quiet. But when copying I can see the
spring loaded tentioner bounce. I suspect it happens when the developer clutch comes on.
Is this developer the same as the IR7200 which my customer has right next to it?
This machine has 1.4 million on the meter. I did tear out the back to get a look, but could not find
anything obviously wrong. Can I run this with the toner hoper out of the way? I would like to see
what is not always turning to cause the blank lines.
I can turn the developer by hand and it does no seem to have any binding.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

check the 22T pulley GEAR ON MAIN MOTOR DRIVE ASSEMBLY for wear
    GEAR.jpg

SORRY - wrong assembly posted/ this worn gear will promote noise

Dev drive CL is different in 7200

      Thanks teckat,
If you find the gear your thinking of just let me know what figure in the parts book and I can
look it up. I will look through the section for the drive again and see what I can find.
I suspected the dev unit or drive clutch because of the machine meter reads 1.46 mil and the
dv mag roller does not look that good. Most of the dusting from the noise seems to be lower
than the dv clutch and over to the right alittle. I think I will recommend a new main drive
belt anyway, the little teeth on the belt are wearing down I'm sure.

      Thanks

Your developer might be trying to lock up too. I have seen this before. and with 1.4 million on the original dev unit. You got your moneys worth. Check those back gears for free movement.

          Simons,
The gears on the dv unit seem to turn ok, may be a little hard but not unusually hard.
I tried to turn on the dv clutch with the main drive running but the Canon logic will not
          let this happen.
I imagine that when the clutch comes on, the extra drag on the drive is causing the
belt to skip teeth. Probably on that gear teckat is talking about.
I still have to look through the book, just needed some de-stress time.

          Thanks

Recently repaired one with a similar problem. There is a triangular shaped assy on the back frame right behind the developer. The developer drive belt runs over the assy. On the assy there is a gear and 2 plastic bushings. The plastic bushings on mine were completely gone causing the noise. I had some brass bushings that I used to repair. Sorry I dont have a photo or part number for you.

              ,
Thank you Bobthecopierman, that was just the direction I needed. That would also explain why
there are blank streaks (front to back) on the copy.
I hope to get a chance to see that unit this week. Right now my jeep is in the shop. The pulley
on the crank shaft came off. I probably overtightened the serpentine belt after repairing the
              power steering pump.

              Thanks again

Hi, i got an exactly same problem with Desert Rat, it make very loud noise at the rear machine. When i open the cover above the waste toner's cover i saw the belt is skipping the gears teeth making a very loud noise. First i though it was a gears on developer assy, i cleaned all the gear and it still same. Then i open up rear cover and main PCB and manually turn the gears around the belt route, its all smooth turn. And also i thought it came from the waste toner assy, PULLEY 18T, but no change when i replace it. I will try on bobthecopierman and teckat suggestion.

Funny you should post this, I am going to see that machine today for that noise. Also this customers
IR7200 needs a fuser web or at least the code cleared.
I will check these notes while I am there to see if i can resolve this with in the customers
                  budget.

                  Thanks

                      jionpao,
I did not get a chance to look at the IR5000 that day.
I spent my day on the 7200. The customer asked if I
could fix the feed probelm also.
Looking at the rollers, I could see they were shot.
After an hour of trying to locate the rollers and cross
referencing this unit with the 5000 for common rollers.
                      I replaced the rollers.
This is why we as techs should not assume something
                      simple.
The customer had just gotten the 7200 a couple of weeks
before my first visit to his shop. I assumed that it was
all in working order. The large paper deck on the right
had never worked and nither had the RD drawer.
We let the paper deck go as it was not really needed.
After an getting the work done tray 3 worked fine but
the right deck would not show on the panel that it had paper.
The paper came up but the display showed empty.
Turns out the front cover was miss adjusted and the
machine did not know the drawer was closed. After
the adjustment of the cover. It worked ok.
And I only wasted my whole day and missed another new customer.

Then he baulks on the amount I charged. Just to git out
I gave him a $50.00 good will credit.

Let this be my lesson again

I am glad it worked out for you that your machine is not
making noise. At least it was narrowed down to a few items.

I got a solution here after i changed the clutch, electromagnetic FF3-3964-000 (developer rear clutch) the noise gone. At first when the machine warming up theres no noise but everytime i install toner from service mode the noise came out.

I just installed a BH C6500 at this customer and thought I would make a copy on his IR5000.
No noise, it stopped. Don't know why but it made a nice copy without noise.
Guess I will just have to wait and see what happens next.

Thank you for all the contributions to this post. I will be well armed with information
the next time this problem happens.
