    Canon IR 603 hard drive

I started getting some 600 series codes. Reset machine then it came back the next day. It was inevitable. The hard drive started thrashing and a peminant 602-001.

So I odered replacement hard drives from a know supplier. My laptop is a good machine that has done a many download firmware over a parallel cable.

When I go to put the machine into download mode I get:

    download mode (cannot initialize)

I tried two replacement drives and get the same thing. I guess I did not see this with the original drive. If I put the old drive in it codes out, if I try to put it into download mode I get the same cannot initialize.

    Thoughts?

what size is that laptop drive you are using for replacement.
original drives were 2-4 gig, and i dont think you can go above 10 or 20gig

It is a 40G. This product is sold under the name/labeled Canram so it is specifically label and marketed for Canon. They even match different hard drive model for different copiers.

ie the 3300 drive is different from the 3320.

sorry i had it backwards. the laptop drive on the Fiery controller does not give e602.

what is an ir603, is it a variant of ir550/600?

if it is, are you changing the drive in the main controller cage.?
if you are you do not need to load anything.

you just go into service mode >function> system> download and select format. it takes 10 seconds

It will work without doing that , but it will keep losing your mailboxes if you don't do that format.

That download switch above the drum is to flash Eprom on IP and MFc. You don't need to do that

I am so sorry I hacked this note out with three customers bitching for me to be there at eight in the morning.

Let's summaries : It was a working IR 2200 with no network no fax plain Jane. The copier started to give a code E 602-0001. Then a E 603-0002. Obviously the hard drive was going.

So I ordered some new hard drives from Memory Experts. They have specific hard drives by model. I have installed these before with no problem and would recommend them highly.

I plugged in the new drive and got ready for the firmware install. I have never seen this before but buy pressing the 2 and8 at power on you go into download mode. Except this download mode came up with download mode cannot initialize. So I had two drives and tried the second. The same code. So, let's put in the old drive that I never tried to go into download mode. It just coded out E 602-001. I booted the machine holding the 2 and 8 to see if the drive would let it go into download mode and it come up with same unable to initialize.

I did open the rat cage and reseat the C chip. Same thing. Then pulled the one memory chip-long- and try to reseat. Same.

This is with the copier as a stand alone device. No parallel cable trying to upgrade. If I move forward with the firmware download in the SST it see the copier, model and version. I move forward to download the SYSTEM everything looks fine and then the red screen of death. Time and time again. Error code in SSt is 124. You can hear the hard drive thrashing.

Soooo, I thought I would give the drive a 1 and 9 on boot "check disk". The little white block lights up, starts blinking, hard drive thrashes for a good ten minutes and then goes into downlode mode cannot initialize.

          Thanks for your help.

your copier boot rom may be toast/ do u have one to swap out ?????????????

just a additional thought, I understand you never had an issue from your distributor. u never know-

Check the jumper on the new hard drives //make sure it is not set at cable .

If so>set the jumper on the hard drive to master.
check manuf. site for correct Master setting

hopefully your main controller hasn't craped out/ also have seen this "Cannot Initialize" issue on iR5000 series when trying to get in download mode

Bad boot ROM. Replaced it on the first go and it was a winner.
